How do i make the text background transparent

I want text to appear as a caption to the video that shows through. I am using "Video Event FX: Sony Text." In help, i find the following description for the properties tab: "If you choose a solid color, the video below your text will be obscured. If you choose a transparent color, your text will be displayed over the video." So, the question is, "HOW DO YOU ACTUALLY CHOOSE A TRANSPARENT COLOR?". (Its always nice when the help assumes you already know how to do what it is you are looking at help for!). I've spent a bunch of time playing with it, but whether i choose background color of white, black, red, etc, none is transparent, and so the video from other tracks does not show through.

Please help! Can anybody write here a -specific- description of how to "choose a transparent color"?

Thank you. Tom.

Under the properties for the text you can change the colour and transparaency for both the Text and for the Background.
You change the transparency by moving the little triangle right to the checkered field up and down.

and just as an FYI, you can select an already transparent text event from the Media Generators tab..
but if you used the Insert/Generated Media menu to create the text, then the background color actually defaults to transparent anyway..
