How do you do "L" & "J" edits in VF?

All VFers!

Okay, how do you do I do L & J cuts in VF? [An “L - J” cut graphically describes the look of the timeline for two clips “A” & “B”, with the audio from the first clip carrying on underneath the “B” video clip – an L shape, and then the audio from clip “B” starting before its own video portion commencing – a J shape … apologies if I haven’t described it clearly enough!]

I’ve got two clips, A & B. I want to keep the audio from A to keep going on underneath clip B. I think this is also called a “Cutaway” shot. Then proceed with video and audio from clip B. I’ve seen this described on the Studio 7 Forum website and it is all very straightforward. I don’t seem to be able to “exchange” a video section of clip A for a video clip of same length from clip B, I only seem able to “cut” video and audio from clip A, which defeats the object of the exercise.

Like most things in VF, once you’ve been told, shown or discovered yourself, it is all too obvious!

Overlap the clips appropriately as you would for the video transition. Then highlight the first clip and type U to ungroup them. You may now adjust the audio transition separately from the video transition. The same thing applies the other way around for a J edit.

Grazie,

Here is how I do it:
1. Trim scene B to where you want the video to start.
2. Butt it up to the end of scene A.
3. Hit the ignore grouping button on the toolbar.
4. Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys to slide the audio trim points for both events.
5. Re-check that ignore grouping button.

Before I learned about CTRL-ALT editing, getting it perfect was a little tricky. This makes it very easy to get perfect cuts for both audio and video.
