How fast to scroll credits up?

I remember seeing some discussion somewhere about this. When I do a credit roll up the screen, how long should it take for a line to traverse the whole distance, from bottom to top? There's more to it than just aesthetics, because TV interlace gives the appearance of a line "pattern" that scrolls up the screen also. If your scrolling speed is near the interlace speed, you'll get some very strange effects. In fact, I think some high-end titling products default to certain scrolling rates because of this.

The credit roll titler in VV3 is pretty weak, and I'm using the old TitleDeko that came with my simple little Studio7 software (hate to even bring it up, because VV really rocks otherwise). Perhaps VV4 will evolve in this area.

Hi Rich,

If yer makin a show for NBC, wing those babies!!

Kidding aside, start with whatever speed you like and tweek if ya get shimmers. This may take some time-fiddling or font-tweeks.

I agree with Marty. Trying to come up with some mathematical formula could take all the fun out of it. I like to tweak on the fly. Little faster, little slower, and view it on my monitor while doing so. Sometimes I prerender it or do a ram render just to make sure it looks exactly as I'm hoping.

I have only had to use a credit roll in a couple of my projects but as far as the speed goes, my formula is this:

Make them
1. Slow enough so that you can read each credit.
2. Fast enough so that you are not waiting for the next line.

Sounds over simplified I know, but if you keep these two things in mind when you are adjusting and previewing I guarantee you will come out with a smooth credit roll. -Shon

Thanks. I knew I'd seen this somewhere.

Since it's pretty darn hard to calculate the total number of "lines" in a rolling credit, perhaps the only real option is to just try a scroll at a couple of different rates, and see where the Sweet Spot is.
