How is “Stabilization” indicated on a timeline?

I have stabilized a few events and happy with the results, but when I look at the events on the timeline, I don’t see any indication that the event was altered in anyway. I can right click on the event and see a Media FX was added, but that is a poor way of determining an event has be changed. Is there a visual indication on the timeline that an event has had a Media FX added that I am missing? I am using VP12.

I don't think you can see any indication of Media FX on the timeline thumbnails but you can see the results of a Media FX if the preview window is in a split-screen mode. You can rapidly scrub through events looking to see where Media FX was applied. It would be especially easy to spot stabilization in the split screen mode preview window on any event as it crops the event slightly. See "Split-screen preview - showing affected and unprocessed video" in the Vegas help. The only way I know of to tell exactly what Media FX has been applied to any specific event is to right click on the event.

Thanks for the reply. I understand your suggestion, it is a pretty good "work around" solution, but not having a visual indication of a Media FX sure seems like a major deficiency of VP. I could have dozens of events on a timeline and may be editing over many weeks. Each time I returned to editing, I would have to go through every event to see if it has a Media Event.

Event FX and Event Pan/Zoom have icons to show the event was altered, Media FX should have a visual marker as well IMO.

At least now I know I am not missing something, thanks again.

In the project media pane, details view, you can see what meda has media fx applied.

Maybe it would be a good idea for SCS to paint the FX icon in the project media window beside events with media FX.

That's a great "work around". In the project media pane I can "Sort" the Media FX events and then "Select timeline event". This will cause all Media FX events to be visually highlighted on the timeline. Maybe not the perfect solution, but close. I can live with that.

You can do media a search of medix fx greater than 0. Then save that as a smart bin and name the bin "Media FX" or whatever you like.

There seems to be a slight bug with this. All audio files are matched with a media fx > 0" search. As a work around for that you can add a condition to explicitly exclude sound files. Something like "type does not contain WAV".

I'll have to submit a bug report for this media fx search problem.

You could consider creating a new video track on the timeline and naming it something like 'Stablised', and then move the clips that you have stabilized to that track as you go.

I take that approach for a number of processes, such as a different timeline track for clips that have been stabilized by Mercalli 3.0 SAL, and then different timeline tracks for clips processed using NBFX Colorfast, Magic Bullet, etc. This way, the different effects are effectively sorted and easy to locate later on in the edit without having to go clip to clip trying if I need to change something in that effect.

You can also rename the clip in the Project Media window and it will show up with the new name in the top right hand corner of event's file name within the timeline (if you have enabled filenames to show up on the event). The draw back to this approach is it changes the name of the file in the computer's directory too. I suggest changing the name so it shows up at the end of the file's name (e.g. something like this "[file name]-ST-fx"). Would be handy if media fx were indicated in the timeline event more seamlessly as suggested above.

Perhaps I'm missing something --- more than likely these days --- but does it matter? If you are happy with what you see in the Preview window is that not the end of any interest in this? If you are not, clicking the FX button will show you what FX have already been applied and you can adjust or add to these as you see fit to get the image you require. I should have thought a general list of what FX have already been applied would be of academic interest only, but, as I say, I may be missing something.
