How Long Should Slides/Stills Be?

I am realizing there is probably a "standard" time to allow for each slide in a presentation. Some of mine are way too short.

Typically how much time do you allow for each picture in a slide show that consists of pictures of family with music in the back ground? How many seconds per picture?

And is there a way to make that time a "default" setting?

Also, I always blend pictures so one fades as another appears so I suppose I should allow some transition time too.

By default, each slide will display for 5 seconds, but I think it's a mistake to use the same time for everything - some pictures just aren't very interesting, some transitions work better if you allow a longer time. And then you'll want to have the timing fit the music. Obviously you can use pan and zoom to move across a picture, which will probably take more time, but you can also use it to do things like reduce the size to a thumbnail and move pictures around the screen - 3 at a time if you feel like it!
