in minutes how much can 4.7GB DVD hold including space for menu and effects? I have a 4.7GB DVD and a 1hr and 40min video that I want to use (it's rendering as we speak at 82% 3.61GB) the DVD-A .dar file is already about 400MB w/o the video so my question is how much video can a 4.7 disc really hold w/o having to lower the quality.
That's just shy of 2 hours. I have a picture slide show in my dvd which I will probably have to get rid of because it's 400mb (Which I think is CRAZUZY! considering the image themself are like 10mb.
WHYYYY won't anyone sell the 7.6GB disc? AHHHHHHHHH It would make my life so much easier. It was a rumor that in the begining of DVDs that they could hold a max of 17GB but decided to go smaller to keep us "inside the box"
DVDs come in different flavors. They are named: DVD-5 (4.38GB), DVD-10 (8.76GB double-sided), DVD-9 (~8GB dual-layer), and DVD-18 (~16GB dual-layer double-sided).
Currently you can only buy DVD burnable disks in the DVD-5 (4.38GB) size. By this time next year you'll be able to buy dual-layer DVD-9 burnables.
Depending on your encoding parameters, you can get as much as 50 hours on a single DVD-5 disk. Most people stop at around 1 1/2 hours, and I think that's about the quality limit for the MainConcept MPEG2 encoder that comes with Vegas/DVD-A
you can have as minutes as you like, it just depends on the quality you are prepared to put up with.
I use about 4mps for about 2 hours, on the variable rate to save space when there are static images.
Also if your a just over the limit try changing the audio to AC3, that helps reduce the data rate.
Look on the DVD-A newsgroup, there should be more help there.
buying a double sided disc wouldn't help any of us because DVD-A doesn't give you the option of using it. If you try to record 5.5GB worth of stuff on to a 9.4 it will just say disc full and won't let you flip it to burn on the other side. I had to redo my dvd and take out about 33 minutes and my final product went from 5.5 to 4.3.
