How to Capture from VCR through Camcorder to PC

I've tried to capture a footage from my VCR to my computer through my Sony Digital 8 camcorder, but I don't see any sign of playback on vegas capture software. I connected a video cable from the cam to the VCR and connected firewire cable from the cam to Pc, but nothing happened when i pressed play on the VCR and the cam also set to VCR. Is there any special way of doing it? Thanks

You may need to check your camera settings to enable Analog-to-DV conversion. Not all cameras do this on the fly, though, so check your camera manual. If your camera doesn't support "E-E" conversion, you may have to dub the analog tape to DV tape first, then capture from the DV tape.

Besides making sure the camera is set correctly, you also need to turn OFF "Enable DV Device Control"

On my camera, (Sony TRV355), I have to make sure my "DISPLAY" is set to LCD. It will not allow pass-thru if it is set to "V-OUT/LCD"

Depending on the camera you need to turn on "A/V to DV". To go the other way you need to turn it off.

The A/V DV Out On/Off is found in the menu of your Sony camcorder. Changing that, plus turning off the DV Device Control, as suggested by jetdv, will do the trick.

Is there a way to when you have video playing through your cam to record it straight on to mini dv instead of capturing it and printing it back to dv?

With my Canon, besides all of the above, I must remove the tape and turn the camcorder function on. Your manual should spell out any details required to use the AV-DV converter. DGrob

Thanks everyone for your tips. I finally got it working BUT only previews 'bout 1 sec or 2 with Vegas Capture software and a blue screen pops up and loses the picture. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks

Not all cameras will allow passthrough. My Sony Digital 8 will passthrough on output, but not input.

If you are attempting to capture from protected media you'll often get blue or black screen as you describe. DGrob
