How to CROP before render?

relaxvideo wrote on 4/16/2017, 11:09 AM

For my specific project i need a 1760x1080 file from fullhd video, so i like to crop 80-80 pixels from left and right side.
How can i do this in V12? At render dialog i don't see a crop option.
If i set project properties to this new size, i get black borders at top/bottom (Vegas keep everything) and i have to manually resize every event on the timeline or use track motion. But this is not a good solution for me, because it's a 3D project with text, etc. and as i remember when i did a test render with this method, i get soft rendered file. (lose sharpness for some reason)

Why not an easy way, a checkbox for crop frame at render dialog?

ps: i can do with 3rd party app (avisynth for example), but i like to render with Vegas (again for specific reason, lol).

Use a render template that allows custom pixel dimensions.

that won't crop sides

Nest your finished project in a new Full HD project.

Apply 1760x1080 unlocked  aspect ratio as a Pan/Crop effect to the whole timeline.

Render to 1760x1080.

Nesting doesn't work. I always import the left view, no matter how i save the project (with stereoscopic mode left or right)

Any other tips?

Render your new sized project through Vegas2Handbrake.
Handbrake will cut the black bars by default, so the video will have your disired dimensions.

I don't know if Vegas2Handbrake renders 3D

not work, as i sayed i have to render from Vegas (specific reason)
I'm familiar with handbrake, ripbot264 and frameserver, but still this method is not good now.

My solution:

  1. Import your 1920x1080 footage on the timeline and than change project settings to 1760x1080.
  2. Open first event with pan/crop tool, rightclick and choose "Match output aspect". This will crop your 1920x1080 event to 1760x1080. Copy/paste this eventattributes to the other timeline events.
  3. Change a rendering template to 1760x1080 and render.

If you render out to 1920x1080 & do what he says that will work. Next time start your project that way.

edit: not all codec's may support the resolution you want.

Doesn't that just change the resolution of the whole frame of video? He wants to actually cut off 80 pixels on each side.

Relaxvideo asked for a 1760x1080 file, whatever reason. I would render to a standard 1920x1080 file and only crop with the pan/crop tool the videoevents on the timeline to 1760x1080. This avoids the risk that strange resolutions are not supported by players or codec's

no codec or playback problem with the 1760 file, its a multiplier of 16.

In this case, yes.

Not all video's want multiples of 16 eighter. Some only want standard sizes. What codec you rendering to? You rendering for Rift or simular? You mention stereo.

I render for my dual projector passive setup (left-right mpeg2), but the silverscreen has not 16:9 ratio.
