How to easily backup a projekt onto a HD?

Hi,

I now have finalized my first serious documentary film on Vegas that will be delivered to a broad (but private) audience. There will be a sequel (part two), and maybe a somewhat shorter edited version to be published later.

My project started small, but finally contains lots of SD and HD material, as well as more than 150 stills, and both Cinescore generated and other music tracks.

Now I need to archieve my project - and all related files - to one external HD. The material I have used is scattered on two internal, and on one fixed external HD. I would like to copy all files that are included (or used) in the project into one common folder on an external HD. It seems that Vegas does not have such a function built in?! Well - it does not contain ANY such project backup functions.

Does a script exist that automates this function? I believe such a script would be very handy for many of us Vegas users! Would it be possible to control such a function using scripting?

Additionally, it would not hurt at all if the actual project (veg) file also is modified so that the references to the files are changed so that next time you open the (backed up) project (from its new location) they point straight to the files in the new locations. Thus Vegas would not have to search for any missing files.

Is this a crazy idea or what? I tried to search the forum but could not find anything covering this kind of a backup function.

I know, you should keep all your material originally so well organized that it is not scattered in different hiearchies on different drives, but this is just REALITY and what happens when you concentrate on the editing work and not on keeping everything "tidy". Your HD's are probably not better organized than your workdesk, and mine is a mess ;)

Comments invited, as well as a volunteer for writing such a script ;)

You must have been napping. ;)

File / Save As ... check the box that says 'Copy media with project'.

Hi Chienworks,

Sorry, I somehow slipped totally that tick-box!!!

Ok - so what gets copied? Is it so that all project media is copied OR, only the files that are USED more that zero times???

I'm looking for a function that copies ONLY the USED files, not the ones that are listed in the project media but not used.... OR alternatively a method to first clean up the project media so that all UNUSED file references gets deleted. Well, you can always do that manually...

Christian

EDIT: OK- so everything in the project media list gets copied. Deleting unused filed manually is actually very simple, since you can sort according to the used number, the multiselect and delete all those files at once. So, a backup of the project with or without the unused material is simple to achieve. Sorry for this "unnecessary" thread :(

One thing that is in my case was confusing is that Vegas has some files in this project tagged as used (negative) -1 or -2 times. These negative (impossible) use numbers are due to some problems in 8.0b. SCS has acknowledged this problem and hopefully gets it fixed in 8.0c.
The current version of VP does not handle some non-ascii symbols in file names correctly (such as å, ä, ö) especially if you run an english version of XP. A ripple edit runs havok the used count in files containing these characters, due to some erroneous internal file name sorting. Probably the sort order is not correct in combination with the language or characters used. Therefore just to be on the safe side and not ruin my backup, I choose not to remove any files, and backed up everything. Well , hard disk space IS cheap :)

"Copy Media with Project" n/a with HD. The best option is Veggie Toolkit plugin. Email the developer via the website... He's developed an update that replaces the original event links with the replacement file. I use it all the time to backup projects and it works like a charm.

I hope Veggie Man doesn't forget to leave handles on the media files (preferably with a setting where you can choose the length, which can differ with projects and shooting styles).

You don't know you need them till you do...

Just don't forget to "clean project media" before you backup, Otherwise you'll be copying files that you used, but then decided not to use as well as the stuff you really need.
