How to edit M-JPG AVI videos in Vegas 5 ?

will-3 wrote on 3/18/2010, 6:16 PM
- I've got a lot of M-JPG AVI videos that need editing.
- When I open one in Vegas (5) I only see the audio
- How can I open and edit an AVI video encoded with Motion JPG?
- I'm guessing I need a codec
- If so is there a particular one you guys suggest I use?

Thanks for any help.

PS
I understand new Vegas vers can process m-jpb and we will update soon... but not now :) so we really need a work-a-round.

To open and edit MJPEG in older versions of Vegas, you can download the MainConcept demo version.
http://www.mainconcept.com/site/prosumer-products-4/motion-jpeg-codec-785/demo-version-789.html
It doesn't expire, but will add a watermark if you encode with it.

If you need to encode MJPEG as well, the paid versions are MainConcept, Morgan, PicVideo and Lead. I don't recommend any free codec "packs" because they may not work and are difficult (read that impossible) to uninstall.

Let me see if I have this right.

I can open MJPEG videos in Vegas 5 with the free Mainconcept demo... and then render from Vegas as a normal AVI or other format... All for free and all without a watermark... right?

And onlhy if I render from Vegas as MJPEG will I get the watermark... right?

Thanks for the help.

I don't know about the other MJPEG codecs, but the Pegasus PicVideo MJPEG codec is super efficient and previews beautifully and renders very quickly.

Will, That is correct, and there is an uninstaller if you decide you don't want it later.

Also, what Laurence says about PicVideo is completely true. It's generally regarded as one of the best.
