how to envelope-mute *one channel only* of an audio track

i can envelope mute/fade/etc both tracks, but
i cannot see the strategy for doing just one track.

Best would be to be able to be able to use, for instance, the right source channel to direct it alone for
both output channels.

i have noise only in one side, occasionaly. i'm willing to make it mono to avoid the noise during those
few seconds here and there

i tried pan, but that (1) did not feed the source right channel into both output channels, and (2) did not
completely silence the opposite channel

thanks

Do this. Do a copy of the track. On the original track do a channel convert, and select "Left Only". On the copied track do a channel convert, and select "Right" Only. Pan the original track Left, and Pan the copied track Right. Now put the Volume envelope, on which ever channel you want.

When you do this make sure that you select the panning mode to be "Balanced (0dB)center" by right clicking on the panning control.
To safety check that you are doing everything correctly, solo your original stereo track and the two "new" mono tracks. Put the stereo track 180 degrees out of phase with the two mono buttons by clicking on the phase button on the stereo track. During playback you should hear nothing (the tracks should be 100% out of phase and should cancel each other).
