How to fix missing files

brentnhunter wrote on 9/6/2015, 1:03 PM
I just tried to open a .veg file and received a number of errors, with Vegas telling me files couldn't be found on my various hard drives. Over the years, I've moved some files from one drive letter to another and now I need to fix them. Does anyone know the best way to fix these? I can see which files are missing but I don't see any easy way to fix them and to put the video or audio files back where they were in the veg file.

Help please. Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you see a dialog box like this and you know where the files are, then check the radio button "Specify a new location or replacement file". That will give you a dialog box where you can navigate to the current location of the files. Once Vegas finds one file, you likely won't have to locate each one if they are in the same folder. Save a version of the project with the new locations and you won't have to go through that again (for a while).

Thanks John. I have seen the message to which you are referring, and I was able to replace files as you suggested. However, the problem I'm asking about isn't the same.

I am getting an error message that says "Warning: An error occurred while trying to open a project file from a previous version. Some streams in the media file could not be opened."

On that dialogue box, under the error message, there are two options: "OK" and "Details". If I click the "Details" button, I see a list of files that says "A nested project source media file was not found" and then in parentheses it shows me the exact file name that can't be found. Some of the files being referred to have old drive letters and all I need to do is point the system to where the new files are, but there is no option for doing so.

Since I cannot find an option, I'm wondering how to get these fixed? Is there an editable file I can edit and just change drive letters that way? Is there another way to get these errors corrected?

Can you use the previous version that the error message talks about?

If you can put the files where Vegas thinks they should be, then try saving (to a new project name), moving the files to where you want them and maybe you will get the message where you do have the option to specify the new location.

Nero annoys me because it is unhelpful if you need to move or rename files.

"A nested project source media file was not found"

Have you tried navigating to the location of the nested project file. Look in the Project Media Pool for files with .veg extension. Open the project file in Vegas Pro, then locate and update the media locations within the nested file and save.

Peter, yes thank you. This seems to be the only option at this point but that means I need o either purchase new drives or create partitions to save files where Vegas thinks they should be. But this for me would be very time consuming and would be the last resort.

John, yes I have tried this but I never get the message that says to replace the files; I only keep getting the error message but never an option to replace/use a different file.

" I need to either purchase new drives or create partitions to save files where Vegas thinks they should be."

If the data is on one drive that is missing, and it's not your boot disk you could go into Disk management and change the drive letter for an existing disk. Might even work if you used USB thumb drives. Wouldn't work if there are numerous disks associated with the projects unless you have numerous thumbdrives.

I've temporarily mapped drive letters to the folders where the files are stored but now I have another problem. I'd like to change the Vegas setup files to point to the real location of the files, not to the temporary location. Does anyone know if there is an easy way to replace one file with another from the timeline, for example, so that I don't need to do any more editing other than telling Vegas the new location of the files?

Right Click on the files in the Project Media tab and select "Replace". Navigate to the folder where the files exist and select. It's tedious.

Will give this a try... thank you!

If you move your media files to the same folder as the project file, Vegas will find them there automatically upon opening the project, without prompting. In your case I guess you'd want to move the nested project and all its media files too.

If your media files are all in a sub-folder of the project folder, Vegas will find the media files automatically if the project folder is ever renamed or moved. Therefore I consider it a best practice to always put the project file in the same folder as your media files or in a parent folder of your media files. It means you never have to worry when a folder is renamed or moved, or when a drive letter changes.

I believe your problem is that Vegas cannot find the project files that are nested in the project that you're opening.
First you need to locate the project files that are the ones nested in that project and fix them so that project is ok. Once they're all OK then you can go back to your main project and from the project media pane replace the lost project files.
