How to get screen grabs from online video ?

I've been trying to get some screenshots of online video to run in a print publication. But no matter what the online format is (realplayer, windows media etc) I can't seem to grab a frame.

If I pause the video (or let it run) and take a grab using Printscrn, the video screen is either absent, or strangely seems to exist in some other layer that can't be combined with the bitmap. Even a screen grab of the screen grab does nothing !

Anyone know how I can grab a frame ?

Above the preview screen, there is a button that looks like a disk. Follow these steps to get a good image:

1. Put the cursor on the frame you want printed
2. Right-click the preview window and choose "display at project size"
3. Change the preview quality (above the preview window) to best
4. Click on the disk icon (above the preview window) and save the file as either a JPG or PNG file.
5. Set the preview quality back to preview
6. right-click the preview window and turn off "display at project size"

NOTE: If you have the external preview turned on, it MUST be turned OFF first.

Some screen capture utilities do not work with hardware acceleration enabled (you end up with a black screen). You may wish to temporarily disable hardware acceleration and try. You may also wish to try Camtasia Studio from www.techsmith.com. I started using it just a few weeks ago and it grabs stills and live. Nice app for our demo cd.

The previous poster was correct, most players use a video overlay to play their video into. The solution is to go into the players preferences pages and turn off hardware assist (e.g, in QuickTime, you want "GDI only" mode). This will make them stop using the overlay, which means the picture will be in real video memory, so your screenshot will now work -- no more blue or black rectangles.
