How to get VP9 to open VP9 when open in Vegas ,...

As I have said before, I just jumped to VP9 so I was leary of answering the prompt to assiciate veg projects with VP9 when initially prompted. Now I want this association. VP9 opens VP8 when I click on "open in vegas". I have changed the windows associatios, but this seems a little deeper...

The file associates is a Windows function. It will use the application you tell it to use.

If you want to open VP8 projects in VP9 it can do that. However, VP9 will not open in VP8.

Once you open a VP8 project in VP9 and save it then it can no longer be opened in the prior version (VP8). To be safe I typically open prior version veg files and save them with a new name. For example MyVideo.veg becomes MyVideoV9.veg. So if I run into problems I can go back to the original version. If you save backups you can also go back to a backed up version but I always play it safe.

I thought this was so, but I right clicked a veg file in Windows and chose open with and chose vp9 and to always use this app. I right click on a veg on VP9 and edit in vegas and poof V8 appears not being able to open the file.

Instead of clicking on the icon shortcut, browse for Vpro9 in your programs or programs 86 folder. That should do it.

Well, it's obvious that you haven't properly associated a .veg file with Vegas Pro 9.

The "vegas" that you chose when right clicking was, obviously, not the correct one. You need to actually go to the proper folder where VP 9 is and choose *that* version of Vegas.

There are two ways of associating a file type with a program in Windows, the "easy" way and the "not easy" way. Unfortunately the "easy" way does not work with most programs other than explorer itself.

If you're using XP it's fairly straightforward to change it using the "non easy" way, which will work for all programs. Howerver in Vista and Windows 7 Microsoft have removed the user interface for changing this properly and you have to resort to editing the registry.

For XP:
1. Open "My Computer"
2. Go to Tools -> Folder Options
3. Go to the File Types tab
4. Find the VEG entry in the list
5. If you have used the "easy" way to change the association, there will be a "Restore" button, click this if it's here
6. Click "Advanced"
7. Choose "open" in the list and click "Edit"
8. Change the path to point to Vegas 9
9. Click "OK" on all windows

For Vista or Windows 7:
1. Open the Start menu and type "regedit" in the search box
2. Click the regedit entry on the list
3. Navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.veg
4. Delete the key UserChoice (This is equivilent to pressing the Restore button in Windows XP)
6. Navigate to the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\vegas80\shell\Open\command
7. Change the value (Default) to point to Vegas 9 (This is equivilent to changing the path using the Advanced button in Windows XP)

DISCLAIMER: Be careful when editing the registry, as it is possible to break your computer. I accept no liability if these instructions cause your computer to become unbootable or otherwise harm your computer in any way. I don't actually have Vegas 8 installed on my computer so the existance of the vegas80 keys is guesswork based on what Vegas 9 does.

I've got 8c and 9c on my work station, and I ALWAYS get asked when opening whichever one isn't associated, if I want to 'associate' it with .veg files. That's it...full stop.

I wimped put and used the easy (but not 100% way) - thank you for your knowledge.

When I right click on a veg and select "Open with..." I get three choices:

- Sony Vegas Pro
- Sony Vegas Pro
- Vegas Pro

I actually have these four versions of Vegas installed:

- Sony Vegas Pro 8.0
- Sony Vegas Pro 8.1
- Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 32 bit
- Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 64 bit

Is there a way to be presented with these names when I right click a veg?

Suggestion ... often folks get "stuck" doing things a certain way in computerworld. Many times (most times) there is at least one other way (if not more) to do what you want.

For instance .. you could open Vegas Pro 9 and *then* find and open the veg file from within VP9 .. instead of finding the veg file and then right clicking on it.

You can set the name that appears on the open with list from the registry as long as the .exe files have different names.

1. Open regedit (Press the Windows Key + R, then type regedit and press enter)
2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications
3. Create the key "vegas90.exe"
4. Inside this create the key "shell"
5. Then inside that the key "Open"
6. Then click Edit -> New -> String Value
7. Call the string value "FriendlyAppName"
8. Double click on the string value and enter the name that you want to appear for the application

Repeat this process from step 2 for each .exe you want to set the name for, but this will only be possible if the executables actually have different names.

Same disclaimer as above.

Steve, unfortunately Vegas 9.0 32bit and Vegas 9.0 64bit are both vegas90.exe so I don't see a way to use your technique to fix those two.

One other problem maybe someone has a fix for: If I am in a 9.0 32bit project and attempt to edit a nested veg, Vegas 9.0 64bit launches. It would seem to me the default behavior should be to open a 2nd instance of the same version being used for the parent veg. I wish Vegas would display a list of acceptable versions (named in a descriptive way) for the nested veg and let me select the one I wish to use. But since that isn't likely near term, is there anyway to force it to open an instance of the same version.
