How to I add time in the middle of a clip?

Hi,

Scenario: I finished editing a clip and want to insert another 15 second clip (multi track) in the middle of my edited clip.

My solution: Currently I do Insert / Time. I Insert for instance 2 minutes and paste the new clip there and then simply remove the extra space.

Problem: this does not push all the volume or composite envelopes. So all my envelopes after the insert are all wrong. It does not push the markers either but I can live with this.

What do you do when you need to insert a clip in the middle of your edit without destroying everything?

thanks!

If I understand you properly, I would split (S key) at the point where I want to make the insertion and use Ripple when I insert the new event(s) at this point (make sure you've selected all tracks etc from the Ripple menu using the arrow at the right of the icon). For a belt and braces approach, drag the first event after the split to the right. It will push all subsequent events along the time line and allow you to drag these back when you have made the insertion,

Richard

There are several options for the ripple tool, selecting the correct option should solve this.

Thank you Richard,

I tried your suggestion. It works if I drag a file from the Project Media. Thanks!

However if the videos I want to insert are already in the timeline then ripple does nothing:

I tried moving the files on the right to the split point (red arrow) and the inserted files just stack on top of the existing files: no ripple despite auto ripple on...

After you move the files to insert the new video, you need to turn ripple off, or else it will ripple again relative to the new video.

@david-tu: the problem is the with auto ripple turned on, it does not ripple if you move a video stack (several videos) that was in the timeline to another place in the timeline (see my screenshot above).

I found a "solution", and it does not involve auto ripple:

Before I do Insert / time... I need to click the "lock envelopes with events". This way when I insert 2 blank minutes all envelopes and markers get correctly moved. I can then drag the clips to be inserted. And then trim to extra blank time.
