How to make multiple clips from single AVI?

Hello,

I am new to video editing and a very new Vegas user. I have a long avi file that I need to break into multiple shorter clips. I would like to be able to label the multiple clips to use for several different projects.
I attempted subclips, but I wasn't successful (could be the user) :-)
It isn’t a matter of space, so I do not need to necessarily create 15-20 clips and eliminate the remaining footage from the drive. I just need a way to manage the individual clips from the main source and trim/edit them as needed in a project.
I hope that makes sense, and I would appreciate any suggestions.

Open your main clip in the Trimmer (within Vegas), and then use the Trimmer to create exactly the "sub"clips you want to put on the timeline.

You can then save the full "set" as a project (which makes a .veg file), then open that .veg file repeatedly to select exactly the "sub"clips you want to use for another particular project, and do a "Save As" for that project.

There are probably other ways of going about this, too...

What was unsuccessful about subclips?

You can rename the subclips.

I am sure a newbie mistake…but here is what I tried:

When I created and renamed the subclips using the trimmer, I could not get them loaded into the timeline (I tried dragging them onto the timeline from the project manager).

If I used in and out points on the trimmer then hit A to add, it would add it with a statement that the media is offline.

Something else is going wrong.

I just started a new project and opened an avi file.

I was able to create 4 subclips and drag them from the Project Media window to the timeline without problems. I was able to rename the subclips in the Project Media window and drag it onto the timeline.

Do you have these on an external drive? Is that drive connected? Can you place the original file on the timeline?
