How to make the volume of background music related to narration?

Simply, I need the backgound volume to be low when the narrator speaks. And the backgound volume to be high when the  narratior stops speaking. And I need this to be done automatically. It would be time consuming if I set  the volume of each point of the envelope manually.

How can I set the envelope of the backgournd music to be related to (or tracking) the narration automatically?

Example:

I would like to tell the sony vegas to do the following:
When narrator speaks, set the backgournd music to -10 dB.
When narrator stops, set the background music to 2.5 dB.

Thank you very much,

Vegasaur has an absolutely wonderful Voice-Over control which does what you want and has silence-detection, fine control over the fade-in, fade-out. Highly recommended!

If you have the time and the inclination, you can also try just ducking the frequencies that interfere with the voice. I investigated this approach a few years ago. But in fact, since then I have ended up just ducking the music across all frequencies, but it might be worth investigating.

"Sidechaining" is what you want to do. Just do a search for "Vegas Pro, sidechaining" and you'll see lots of options and video tutorials. I recall I once did it years ago in Vegas Pro, with the built-in audio FX it but it's a bit complicated. I also own Sonar Platinum which can do it very easily. Maybe you can find an inexpensive plug-in that can do it easily. Come to think of it, I don't think my Sonar plug-in works in Vegas. Oh well, good luck.
