Unfortunitly, you can't import one veg file into another (must not like veggies! :) ). However, you can have 2 copies of Vegas open, then copu one whole project and paste it into another. I usually do the samething you do: render and import avi's. that might actuatly be the faster way. since you are already renderingyout effect, it won't be re-rendered in the other veg file, it will just be chroma keyed.

Use the frameserver plugin from Satish.

Frameserve the project and, in another vegas instance, put the frameserved video to the timeline. You can use this clip with all the effects, and you don't waste HD space rendering an avi.
