How to migrate V8 custom render settings to V9?

ken c wrote on 5/28/2009, 8:11 AM
Hi -

I've got a lot of custom render settings I've developed for V8, eg .wmv v10 render output settings and more; how do I migrate those so that they appear in the render drop down menu in V9 when I'm using it to render? Right now for example none of my .wmv custom render settings are showing as options when I render from V9...

thanks,

Ken

How do I transfer render templates again?
Read it and weep :-(

Hi Mike, thanks -

it looks like the V8 render templates are in:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Sony\File Templates

but V9 stores them in

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Sony\Render Templates
instead...

I'll see if I can just copy all the subdirectories in the first "File Templates" to the "Render Templates" subdirectory, if that would work, eg like aviplu/mcplug, though I don't think so because they're all in registry key name subdirectories... this looks like a V9 bug -- can sony/anyone help?

I'd appreciate it, as I have dozens of custom V8 render templates that don't show up in V9.

thx,

k

Ken,
It's not where the custom settings are saved.

It's a file format difference as well. Tried to copy to the 'Render Templates' and no go.

In that directory, the saved settings have a file ext of .sf2. The saved directory name is also different. As well, the binary headers are different, as when I just renamed a saved settings copied to that directory, it still was not picked up.

Sadly, I think SONY has changed things under the covers and it doesn't look like a simple migration.

FWIW .. HTH

This is strange. I just checked, and V9 has all my old custom render settings - it must have imported them from V8 automatically.

Peter,
If you look the folder where v9 put your settings, what file extension do your custom render settings have??

Have you verified that all your customer render settings have gone over to v9? In my case some did, some didn't. Can't see a pattern, tho'.

Thx,
Tom

The extension seems to be .sft2

- and sorry, I can't verify that they've all been imported, I don't have a definitive list, but all the ones I've thought of seem to be there.

Is there a particular set I can check for? Ken mentioned wmv, and I have a folder named "wmv11" containing a preset I created in V8.

Tom Pauncz wrote on 5/29/2009, 6:54 AM
Thanks for verifying Peter.
None of this makes sense.

All my custom render settings for AVI files were migrated over though I don't know how. While for v8 they live in 'File Templates' - ''aviplug' - '{EA9D287B-C85A-11D3-BB3A-0050DA1A5B06}', for v9, no such directory structure exists, yet the settings are there. However, if I save a new AVI setting, a folder 'avi' is created and contains just that one.

Tried creating a 'wmv11' folder under 'Render Templates' and copied over two wmv custom settings I had and renamed extension to .sft2. One is now seen by v9, the other cannot.

Tried it with a couple of others and the same thing - some are picked up by v9, some are not - no rhyme or reason I can yet figure out. Two things are obviously different - directory structure under 'Render Templates' and the .sft2 extension.

Very frustrating.... perhaps I should report it to SCS.

Hi guys, thanks for talking about it, and sending a bug report to SCS, just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me...

My only workaround which I really don't want to do for all my 2+ dozen custom avi/mov/wmv render settings, was to open V8 and V9 simultaneously, then painstakingly set up a new custom render setting file in V9 by looking up each setting in the V8 file and copying each parameter manually in V9 to create a new custom render file, which I shouldn't need to do.

Both V8/V9 are standard installations to the default directories in winxp home so shouldn't be a hassle... let me know if anyone else finds out why V8 custom render settings aren't migrated to V9 and a solution, many thanks!

Tom, please let us know if SCS tells you anything different than what they told me.
Their answer was to follow the procedure in the How Do I: Recreate your custom presets on Video FX and transitions Knowledgebase article.
I replied that I didn't want to mess around in the Registry and that there had to be a better answer.
I haven't heard from them since :-(

Mike,

I will certainly post as soon as I hear back.

It may just be semantics, but FX and transitions, and render templates, in my book at least, are not one and the same.

Tom

Right; the custom render templates I believe are different than fx/transitions. It would be so much easier if they'd just do what adobe does and park them in a /common subdirectory, so when we update Vegas versions there's no problem... curious as I'd had no problem when updated V6-7-8, it remembered all the custom render settings, just not from v8-v9, so it's a v9 issue.

any ideas how to just copy the settings from v8 to v9, eg subdirectory copying etc that will work? it seems that for some reason v9 is setting up specific registry keys for custom render settings, which is too complex and didn't migrate v8-v9 properly...

Count me among those who've been stung by this change. I think Sony dropped the ball on this one.

For me, a hobbyist, this probably isn't a critical issue. I can migrate my templates from V8 to V9 as I need them. But what do pros do? Will they be happy spending hours moving settings from V8 templates? Maybe they have assistants or interns who can do the grunt work for them, but still, they can't be happy paying people to do something like this instead of productive work.

How hard could it be to write a simple tool to recreate V8 templates in the v9 format? Sony, please help us out. There must be hundreds or thousands of loyal Vegas users who have run into this problem. Give us a way to move our template settings to V9.

I have had a couple of back-and-forth conversations with SCS. So far, no resolution, though I think the problem is understood and they are working to resolve.

Tom, it sounds like you got further than I did which, hopefully, is a good thing and that it will be fixed in 9.0a, whenever it comes along.

I hope they fix this soon - I have lots of custom render settings I created in V8, they'd migrated in from from V7 to V8 automatically when I installed V8, but it didn't migrate them from V8 to V9/9a, and none of the fixes seem to work... solutions anyone? on winxphome
dvogel wrote on 8/19/2009, 2:33 PM
It doesn't look like their going to fix it soon. 9.0a came out without anything. Is there any way to find out if anything is even being considered? I don't need a promise of a date. Just the knowledge that I don't need to spend hours converting all my templates would be useful. Anyone from Sony want to give us some words of encouragement or shoot down the idea completely so we know where we stand?
