How to organize Folders in the Bin?

Videojohn wrote on 9/9/2009, 12:56 AM
Good Morning,
I am at the moment editing a project in Vegas Pro 8, with a lot of different material. So I had to create many different new bins with different names.
But one thing I do not succeed to do is to reorder the folders after they have been created! For example, when I add a new bin (folder), it automatically goes at the end of the list, and is not classified in alphabetic order. So when I have many different bins it makes it difficult to search the media pool because I can have, for example, a folder starting with M before one starting with A, etc.
Does anyone know how to change order of the folders (bins) freely?
Thank you for your help,
VideoJohn

This is one of the many reasons I use Media manager. Sorry . ..

You can drag Bins about, but I find the process troublesome and not logical in the way they stick to another Bin and become a Sub-Bin.

You may want to look at Johnny Rofrano's (VASST) UltimateSPro. It DOES have a method of setting up bins. But recording them is also Dragging and Dropping.

Not see an Alpha-Numeric sort for bins? But there is on Media Manager! I treat a Library as a Project specific Bin-type option. Here I use the "Tagging" system. Once Tagged the media is also available globally. Which is nice!

Maybe pressing F5 will refresh the display in order? Dunno, never used bins.

I merely create subdirectories if i need to arrange things in groups.

Grazie, I was recently thinking about using Media Manager for bin organization in projects but it seems to me there is one huge drawback. You can't use sub-clips in Media Manager! :(

True - BIG drawback! MM is Global. SubClips are Project specific.

One awkward but workable way is to order them manually.

1. Create a temporary bin ("Temp") and drag and drop all the other bins into it.

2. Browse into that "Temp" bin and drag the bins out of it (dropping onto the main bin) in the order you want them to be.

The newly dropped bins will end up at the bottom of the list in the order you bring them out. Delete the "Temp" bin when done.

It would certainly be nice to have a one-click "create new bin" icon right there by the "bin" window, and it would also be nice to be able to simply draq the bins up and down into the order you want!

OK . . .Chapter 3 of the FREE VP9 Manual is devoted to Media Manager.

Download and read!

Well I just skimmed it (I'm getting ready to leave town) but it looks like it covers everything that's in V8 help....I'll read it more thoroughly when I get back but can you indeed explore folders in Media Manager like in Explorer (without searching)?
Thanks,
Randy

I don't understand your question?

I can explore and I can do wild-card searches and REAL word searches . .

Why on earth wouldn't they just make the bins sort alphabetically?

It works well for other pro NLEs. If you want one or more clips to go to the end, you start the name with an underscore ("_"), if you want them at the end..., etc.

Grazie, this is probably my biggest gripe about MM. When shooting performances or conference presentations, I may end up with 2 hours of continuous clip. It would be great to be able to bring that into trimmer, create subclips, and tag the subclips in MM. Then I could easily pick and choose the subclips I want to use in current and future projects.

For projects with lots of short clips, MM works a treat for me.

Oh, one other thing I've probably mentioned before - I wish MM had built into it the ability to archive footage and maybe even projects. This would make it easier to use MM to call up offline clips or nestable vegs for use in a project.

Sorry it took so long, I've been out of town.
I don't understand your question?

So you're saying that you can open any folder (that's not already in the library) and explore (showing thumbnails)?
If so please explain.
Thanks Grazie,
Randy

Media Manager is all about "Tags". Forget Folders. I Tag Media. Once Tagged it is Globally available to ALL Vegas Projects I do.
