How to overlay/superimpose two videos????

I shot two videos of the same scene with a tripod. the only difference is I'm sitting in a different chair in the two videos. I would like to superimpose the two videos so I can see me sitting in both chairs at the same time.

I can switch back and forth and use envelopes to fade back and forth between the two versions of me, but I can't get both to show at the same time. I would like to literally have both videos showing at the same time, Everything should be the same and both versions of me should show.

Is there any way to do this with Sony Movie Studio?????

Put the videos one above the other on two separate tracks in sync.

Add the "cookie cutter" effect to the upper video. This will allow you to punch a hole in the image to let the lower video show through. There are some confusing settings in cookie cutter, such as whether the cutter is a hole that shows the lower track, or is a small piece of the upper track with the lower track showing behind it. It's not very instantly clear which is which, but it doesn't really matter. If you get the wrong one, simply use it to cover you rather than the empty chair.

Sizing it and positioning it correctly are also just a matter of tweaking until it's right. Normally it's very small so you'll have to increase the size quite a bit. With a tiny amount of effort you can get it to simply cut out one half of the screen and let that side show the other track.

thank you! that pretty much worked! However the controls are not very good. we should be able to have more control of the shape and the position of it.

There's a lot you can do with it once you get used to it and experiment a bit. I'll agree the control is crude and clunky, but it usually gets the job done. I often resort to typing in values instead of using the mouse.

If you want finer control look into masking. You can create any shape/size mask you want in a photo editor, painting white where you want to see the top track and black for the lower track, with various shades of grey for varying levels of transparency. Import this into a track above the two video tracks and use it as a composit mask.

You could try a seam using pan/crop. It's tricky the first couple of times.
Your success depends on camera and lighting stability.
