How to pause video vs inserting a screen grab

GLS wrote on 11/29/2013, 5:10 PM
Couple more noob questions here...

I wish to pause a video event to jive with a separate musical score. I know I could insert a screen grab, but I would rather just pause the video event to get the same effect with less work. Surely this is a simple task but I can't find it in the tutorials or manual. Anybody?

Question #2:

What are the pros and cons of using the Timeline Transport Toolbar buttons vs the Video Preview Transport Toolbar buttons? I have gravitated towards just using the Timeline Transport buttons and now wonder why a separate set are provided for the Video Preview.

Thanks!

Does your version of Movie Studio have video event velocity envelopes? I think it may have been added in later versions, but i'm not sure which one (last one i used was version 3). If so, you can insert a velocity envelope and add keyframes to drop the velocity to 0, which is a pause.

Keep in mind that this will only affect the video, so if that clip also has audio, the audio won't pause. If you do have audio in the clip and need to keep it in sync probably the simplest thing to do is to split at the point where you want a pause, drag the material after the split over to the right, and then add the 0 velocity to the material on the left and drag it out to fill the gap.

If you don't have velocity envelopes then you're stuck with inserting a still frame.

There's no particular advantage of one set of transport controls over the other. They're purely for convenience. Sometimes i'll have a plugin window that covers the timeline controls so it's helpful to have a second set that i can use without having to close/move the plugin window.

Thanks for the reply Chienworks.

I have version 12 and it appears to me that velocity envelopes are not available unless you have Vegas Pro. Upon researching your post I did learn a lot about keyframes, so I've got that going for me!

Thanks again.

1. If the frame you want to freeze is the actual last frame in the event media, just disable loop in the event context menu and click+drag it out as far as you want.

2. If the event has been shortened (trimmed) from the actual media, just render the event to a new track or render a subclip, then use that new media as in step #1 above.

Really very simple once you've done it a couple of times.

Really simple indeed. That's what I was hoping for.

Thanks musicvid10!
