How to render a DVD from 720p 25fps project?

Hi all!

I have a project that is 1280x720, 25p. Shot on EX1 and the project files are in mfx format. I want to make a widescreen pal DVD out of this.

What render template should I use? Pal DVD widescreen template forces the project into 720x576. It leaves black bars on left and right side of the image. Is this avoidable by other then cropping the image?

Im quite confused on how to do this? Im using Vegas Pro 8b and will use DVD architect 4.5b to make the DVD.

Thank you!

Anyone done this before? Do I need to give more details?

The problem you're seeing is that widescreen SD format isn't really 16:9. You've basically got three choices ... leave it the way it is, crop it, or let the image stretch to fill the frame. If it was me, i'd probably opt for the third choice since the amount of stretch necessary won't be much.

Wow, so in that regard DVD is really not 16:9? And my widescreen TV isn't really 16:9? Where does 16:9 originate then? 35mm is 1.85:1... What recorders or players are really 16:9 besides EX1? And how do people make DVD's out of them?

Im totally baffled :O

It's close enough to 16:9 that it's not worth coming up with a new name for it. Maybe 82:45 would be a close integer ratio. That's only off by 0.6 pixels. 16:9 is off by 25 pixels. It's annoying, but probably not enough to lose sleep over it. Perhaps in the SD world it was assumed that overscan on the sides of the screen would make this a non-issue.

HD, on the other hand, really is 16:9.

If you want to render without the pillar box (i.e., black bars on the sides) you should create your project as HDV 1280x720p because this is the correct media aspect. Then render the results to PAL Widescreen and make sure you check:

[X] Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox).

This will compensate for the difference in 16:9 and fill the frame correctly.
