how to render to *.mov H264 encoded?

I read that Vegas 6 can encode to h.264 so I purchased the full version instead of movie studio.

Now, how exactly do I get a quicktime *.mov file with h.264 encoded video?

I can render to MainConcept *.mp4 format - thats half the work. I can then use quicktime pro to make this into a *.mov. But that means encoding twice and loss of quality.

I tried "Quicktime 6" as format and choose "h264" in custom encoder options.

Make Movie => Save to Harddrive => Advanced Renderer => Custom
I have H.264 as a possible video format in the dropdown list. I choose that and Save/start the rendering. It starts to work but only for a few seconds and then It throws an error:
"An error occured while creating the media file ..."
"An error occured while converting with a codec."

Is there a way to create H264 *.mov directly using Vegas?

I want *.mov since I upload those movies to a web site and there are only *.mov but no *.mp4 files allowed. I want quicktime since huge part of the possible audience are MAC OSX users.

thanks for help

Jens,

Have you downloaded and installed Vegas version "d"?

I think that H264 was not part of the original Vegas 6 release.....

I think you need to install the latest QuicktimePlayer version 7.1. There were lots of problems with QuicktimePlayer 7.0.

Thank you both

I have
- Vegas 6.0d (Build 210)
- QuicktimePro 7.1

I can export to h.264 but only as MPEG4 *.mp4 file

I'd like to export rather as h.264 encoded Quicktime *.mov file.

again, when I choose "Quicktime 6" as type, choose "Custom ..." I have a lot encoders listed, i.e. Sorensen, Intel. h.261, h.263 and also h.264. Works with everything here BUT h.264

Now I wonder why?
