How to replace event on timeline while preserving track motion?

andy-stecklein wrote on 11/13/2017, 6:45 AM

I would like to replace a media event but want to preserve the track motion key frames that are associated with it.

  • Is there a way I can simply choose to replace the media with something different from my media pool?
  • Alternatively I could delete the event then drag and drop the media that I would like to use in its place but If I delete the event, the track motion gets deleted as well. Is there a way to delete the media from the event without deleting the track motion key frames?

Many thanks in advance for any help!

Two ways to accomplish this:

Replace the used event on the timeline in the Mediapool (rightclick in Mediapool and choose "Replace" and direct to another event).

or add another event as "Take" on the event on the timeline (drag and drop from mediapool while holding rightmousebutton instead of leftmousebutton and choose "Take"

Thank you 3point!

The second method you suggested works great for what I need to do!

I knew about the first method you mentioned but in this case it doesn't work for me because the event I want to replace is actually being used in another location in the project as well, and I don't want that other instance being replaced only one of them.

Thanks again!

Then also is the first method possible.

Rename/Change that event on the timeline by rightclick and choose "create subclip".
That one appears now in Project media as new ......subclip. Replace that one and the second one on another location staays unharmed.

Thank you Cornico for providing another time saving solution for me!

One more for you related to your second bullet point...Disengage the Lock Envelopes to Events button (at the right side of the bottom toolbar) and then you can move/delete the original event without affecting the Track Motion (or other) envelope points and add a new event.

That's a good one, Gary. I always thought that the Lock Envelopes to Events button only affectes the behavior of Envelopes keyframes. Thanks, never too old to learn.😊
