How to set up proxy workflow in Pro 10?

Hi everybody,

Would someone be so kind as to tell me step by step exactly how to set up a proxy workflow in Vegas Pro 10. I would really appreciate it. I have searched and read and everything I can find is with the assumption of some precious knowledge, but I dont have any. Lol.

A hp search in V10 says basically render all the files to another format then for the final render go in and one by one replace them. If this is the only way to do it, it would never work for me. I will have too many files and renders to to back and forth.

Lastly i would ask if I upgrade to V13 would I have any major improvements in this specific area?

Thanks so very much!

Joshua

"...render all the files to another format then for the final render go in and one by one replace them."

You could render your intermediates to files with the same name in a different folder than the originals, rename the folder where the originals are and answer all the messages when Vegas can't find the files. A bit onerous.

"...if I upgrade to V13 would I have any major improvements in this specific area?"

That's one of the advertised reasons to upgrade.

When I used proxies in the distant past (VP8, I believe) the Proxy Stream script made it quite easy. You can download the VP9 script here:

and then check this link for a few caveats when using it in VP 10:

See this topic: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=909261

in VP10 you can use Vegasaur Proxy Builder or Gearshift
VP13 has built-in proxy support

I've used the excellent Gearshift for years; do a massive render to proxy via Gearshift at the beginning (probably overnight), then work exclusively with the proxies. When the project is finished you tell Gearshift to replace the proxies with the originals, which it does in an instant, then you do your final render. Works great.

With proxies I've done editing of more-sophisticated projects on an older laptop, no sweat.

i've done it the way John suggests, but I don't have Vegas search for the missing files. I renamed the proxy folder to .old (or something similar) and rename the correct folder to the proxy's name. As long as the file names are the same, it will work as expected.
