How to turn on preview?

Hello guys,
I am still trying to figure out why I can't capture HDV video footage. When I launch CAPTURE VIDEO, it says "Preview turned off"
Computer does detect the camcorder, it allows me to play and stop the camcorder, preview is however disabled and capture button does not capture the video. Is there anything I should change in Properties Settings?

Enable the Sony Video Capture application:

a. From the Options menu, choose Preferences.

b. Click the Video tab.

c. Clear the Use external video capture application check box.

d. Click the OK button.

From the File menu, choose Capture Video (or click the Capture Video button in the Project Media window) to start the Sony Video Capture application.

Configure your HDV device in Video Capture:

a. Click the button in the Capture window to open the Capture Preferences dialog.

b. Click the Device tab.

c. From the Device type drop-down list, choose IEEE 1394/MPEG2-TS Device.

d. From the Device drop-down list, choose your HDV camera.

Capture your clip:

a. Use the transport controls below the Video Preview window to cue your tape.

b. Click the Start Capture button to start capturing.

c. Press the Play button on your camcorder.

d. Click the Stop button (or press Esc) to end the capture procedure.

Your clip is saved to the folder specified on the Disk Management tab of the Capture Preferences dialog. This path is displayed in the Capture Folder box in the Video Capture window.

Select the Enable HDV scene detection check box on the General tab of the Capture Preferences dialog if you want to create multiple files if scene changes are detected. When the check box is cleared, HDV clips will be captured to a single file.

If you plan to edit the HDV clips (transport streams), you're ready to start editing on the timeline.

If you plan to edit intermediate files on the timeline, you can convert your captured clips to an intermediate format.

Hello Ivan,
thank you so much for your response. It is very weird, I did it exactly like you describing,
but it still does not let me capture anything. I am able to control the camcorder via capture window controls,
but when I click "record" button, preview window stays black. It is very weird, because camcorder is recognized by Vegas, but it does not capture the footage. Any idea what it may be?

I'll hazzard a simple guess. What do you have selected In the Options menu? Never Preview, Smart Preview, or Always Preview?

Also, are sure that you're are not capturing video? Have you looked for files in the folder specified as the Capture Folder on your computer?

first of all, thank you so much for your response. I really appreciate your support and it gives me
relief from my frustration, because I really can't find out what I do wrong.
In Options menu, I have selected Always Preview. Regarding the capture folder, I can't find any captured clips. It is set on my only drive under my documents / Sony Vegas / projects / name of project / media ... which is empty.
I have even checked my camcorder output settings, just to make sure I did not miss anything, but it is set for HDV, fire wire (IEEE) is correct....I just don't know what else to do.

It sounds like you're doing everything right. Can't imagine what the issue might be. The process is really not that complicated because I was able to capture immediately after I got Vegas. Hooked up the camera and did not have to mess with any settings.
The last bit of advise I have is to view properties under File menu. On the the Misc. tab, do you have an active tape?
(Unknown) is as good as anything. Good luck.

Hello,
yes, that is exactly what I was thinking, that settings for capturing should not be extra super difficult, specially when I have tried every possible setting. I guess I will have to call Support Team and see what they think.

You could try a Vegas factory reset (hold CTRL+Shift) while starting up VMS. You will lose all customized presets in the process, though.
