Now that the link is posted, I would have to say many are very nice to have, but not all are must haves unless you have $$ with nothing else to be spent on.

It's neither true nor false.

Much of what is suggested in the article would depend on the type of work being done. Each job dictates the "extras" needed, not the software.

I'd have to weigh into the middle...Simply because things like the Contour Shuttle Pro does improve workflow for many, obviously time spent in the forums educates people, and great tools that Jeffrey comments on do indeed help with the 'reach for the fast answer' types of situations. Can you edit well with Vegas if you don't have these tools? Absolutely. Will all of these tools help you make better video? Absolutely. are they all critical to own? Nope. Do many editors use these tools in Vegas? you betcha.

The article is mostly opinion and weak on facts.

Example the mention of the "special" keyboard, buying tapes, books, all depend on your skill level, how you work, what you want to accomplish, what you already know, or don't know.

Nothing beats hands on experience. Much of what's offered as extras is well covered in the FREE Vegas PDF manual. Spend a few hours reading the manual... then you too can write a book.

That isn't to say that the various books, tapes you can get aren't good or helpful, but nothing replaces reading the manual cover to cover regardless what software you're trying to learn. That's so basic it shouldn't have to even be said. Applies to learning some simple application, an applicaiton that's moderately difficult like Vegas or Photoshop or highly technical things like Action Script, VisualBasic or Java development. RTFM! First! You'll be miles down the road if you do.

It's Jeffs opinion and probably is influnced by the kind of work he does--I dont need lots of the stuff he mentions---particularly the alternative media---The only thing I disagree with him about is the ADS enclosures. I gave up on them after having several fail--I now use granite digitals enclosures and they have been very reliable.

It's just a series of recommendations. You can decide which you need.

In general, remember that Headlines are only the sizzle, not the steak.

Hey Rex,

I've got two ADS enclosures now. No failures yet. However, I bought a Granit Digital bridge board a while back and it totally suffers from playback stalls.

Ya can't win.

Same here, a boatload of ADS, a couple Maxtor, 1 Granite, 1 Belkin. Maxtor and Granite are both dead. Belkin works, but doesn't stack with existing drives. Quiet though.
Regarding learning curves, lots of folks never have even looked at the Vegas (or any other manual) because they either don't have the patience or motivation to read the manual, or the flow of the manual just doesn't make sense. While I was part of the first Vegas docs, I can honestly say I've not ever once read the manual, because can't learn that way. Which is why we do the VASST live tours, the VASST books, and the VASST DVD's because everyone is a little different.
Contour Shuttle Pro...or Bella with Jog/Shuttle for Vegas...everyone should try one. Makes a huge difference in the editing world, particularly for those that have done time in an edit bay with analog.
Jeffrey forgot .NET in his list. And he forgot the Tsunami and Excalibur tools too. All timesavers. Both reduce the amount of headscratching some folks end up doing.

He didn't mention any 2d picture editing programs eigther (Photoshop, PSP, etc). I find Photoshop more important then most of the other apps I have (not counting Vegas of course).

Hey--whats that cliche--One man's ??? is another man's ????? . You get the gist. Its amazing to me how different people have different experiences with the same equipement---Maybe it says something about manfacturing of high tech equipement in general. Pretty inconsistent. For instance, the ADS issue---Spot and Rob have never had problems with their enclosures--and I and several pros I know have.

ADS bombed on me as well. I've owned three and am on my last one, which I use for internal HD BU only. Video freezes in vegas coming off that drive. And these days, the external HDs are not that much more fo the same space. I've got 2 Maxors & 2 Buslinks that work like a charm.

The author of that post article left out the most importand tool to me.
The ParticleIllusion it is the best addition to Vegas.
Check out the wondertouch.com web site- download demo and see for yourselfe. Demo it is fully functional, but put watermarks to rendered video.
I love it.
