I just installed a dreamcolor monitor in my studio. There's a fair amunt of buzz over this monitor, as well as a few others like the Eizo. Here's a few articles on these monitors that might help you out:
Bottom line: unless you feed it RGB progressive, the dreamcolor engine will default to full range RGB. Without the dreamcolor engine, you lose the 10 bit capability.
Thanks Bill. Will read through those in the AM. The user manual is rather brief and although I downloaded the most recent firmware and interface software there is a mismatch between instructions and OSD. I'm feeding it progressive from DVI. I see (at a quick glance of those articles) that HDMI is the better input. The various colour modes function OK, but I need to acquire the KZ300AA to get serious about calibration. The installed modes seem to be associated with various specific screen brightnesses and I would have liked to have had the manual tell me about those in more detail. For example, the 709 profile seems to default to 50 (units?), which seems a bit low. Anyway the articles look informative and contain further links.
EDIT: not OSD, the HP Display Assistant. And screen brightness is in cd/M2 (I didn't have my machine running)
Not much is said of the newest "Display Port". I am feeding that port directly from my Quadro FX3800 Display Port. I beleive HDMI is a subset of Display Port protocol. This Display Port technology is evolutionary, and, I beleive we have yet to see its full potential.
I believe Display Port / HDMI on the Dreamcolor is the only way to feed 10 bit video to the display. Only a limited number of the expensive nVidia cards support 10bit over HDMI / Displayport.
There's an interesting thread about this on DVInfo (think that's where I read it). One question that arose is 'can Vegas feed 10bit video to the video card?'
Thanks Bill. That is an extremely useful thread. The first thing I did after reading the other threads was to order the HP calibration device and then got on with other things. The creative cow thread very quickly pointed out my faulty procedure for upgrading the firmware (was that in the User Notes? -- I missed the bit about connecting the USB cable!). Really, I need to be more diligent in reading instructions.
