HP now offers Blu-ray drives on laptops!

HP has been offering a couple of different HD DVD options on their laptops. Now they are also offering Blu-ray playback drives on some of their laptops. By the way, these drives will also play back HD DVD.

This is pretty frustrating to me because I just bought a laptop a couple of weeks ago with one of their DVD+-R/HD DVD playback drives. If I was ordering it today I could have got the Bluray drive and not already been out of date!

Anyway, for anyone looking at an HP laptop, watch out for this and only buy an HD DVD model if it is offered at a healthy discount.

Most laptop DVD drives are plugins. Generally a slider on the bottom releases the drive and it slides out.

I think the CD/DVD drives are now a standard form factor and standard connections for the laptop.

I had a Sony Vaio a few years back that was a simple DVD player CD writer. Then the DVD writers came out. Next time I ordered a laptop for the company, I ordered one with a DVD writer and swapped it into my laptop.

So, don't give up hope, just trade up the drive when you need it, or want it. Yup, it will cost you a few more bucks.

I just ordered the 20.1" HP laptop and they could NOT offer me a Blu-ray drive.

I'll contact them again. Thanks.

That's the exact laptop I have. It is just wonderful aside from this one issue.

Here it is on the HP site with the Blu-ray drive option:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Usage&v1=Extreme+multimedia&series_name=HDX_series&a1=Usage&v1=Extreme+multimedia

The drive supports HD DVD as well so it is a win/win situation to get it.
