HTML5 ??

LReavis says: "it even works in my Linus (Ubuntu) Firefox (which is an older version). Are you going to post a .JPG of the code?"

Steve Mann says: "Anyone see the irony? HTML5 is supposed to replace the downloading of a player"Yeah. it turns out my webpage that displays HTML5 and defaults to JW Player/Flash will only display HTML5 in mainstream browsers - IE9, FireFox, Chrome. Tests with devices that will only display HTML5 are not working. Furthermore, IE9, Firefox, Chrome work just fine with Flash, so the question becomes - why bother?

Well, I've discovered one more interesting fact. I've been focused on rendering clips that have the best quality at the lowest bitrates. i now find out that the iPhone (and maybe the 'droid), will only play HTML5 that has certain, lower quality specs. That may be why my earlier tests have not worked with these devices. So, I've coded up two more tests. Before I abandon this wild goose chase, could someone with an iPhone or 'droid try each of the following links and reply back with your results?

For LReavis, here's the html (remember we're still in test mode):

amendeqw,

Neither link below plays on a Samsung Captivate running Android 2.2. For what it's worth they both play on a first generation iPad.

Now that's encouraging.

Jerry - I don't have an iPad or smartphone (I'm an old fart who uses the cellphone to make PHONE calls), so your tests are appreciated. Don't give up yet.

"I'm an old fart who uses the cellphone to make PHONE calls"Ha! I'm with you, Steve. The most important feature my cellphone can have is a long-lasting battery (maybe a good camera would be nice). And I'm a technology guy - I just don't see the need to be tethered to the Internet every waking moment. Oh, and texting - I tell my friends and family that I will happily read their text messages, but don't expect a reply unless it's a voice call.

That said, one of the difficult aspects of continuing to pursue this HTML5 mini-project is that I don't have any testing devices. But I do have Google and I've just found out that Droids don't like the "type" attribute in the <source> tag. So here's a new test: http://www.jazzythedog.com/testing/droidtest.htm

Could someone with a Droid and/or iPhone/iPad test this? Jan?

If that doesn't work, I might have to add some JavaScript.

Thanks,
...Jerry

"Won't play on a Droid" & "The latest link works on the iPad but not on the Android phone."Bummer! I'll do further research.

Hi Steve, Just for reference, though the MIME acronym does say Internet Mail types, it doesn't mean email messages specifically. Here's the definition for MIME from Microsoft's site ( http://goo.gl/2EtgM )

Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) is a specification for creating file formats to be used in the exchange of e-mail, in Web documents, and in other applications on intranets and on the Internet.
