I can't capture in stereo with the capture module in V4

When I capture with V4 from my Sony DV camera the resulting clip is always in mono but when I capture with ScenalyserLive the resulting clip is in stereo. When playing back the Vegas captured clips the L/R voicemeter indicates the exact same strenght/volume whilst when playing back Scenalyser (demo) clips the L/R voicemeter indicates different strenght/volume. The very same clip has a bitrate of 3.62 MB/sec when captured with Vegas and 3.70 when captured with Scenalyser (they clips don't have exactly the same length but my calculations are based on the exact length of each individual clip).

The question is if Vegas don't capture DV in stereo, if there is something wrong with my set-up or if just doing something wrong when capturing (can't see how this could be the case since it is just to press the button). Anyone that has any idea what's going on?

TIA

Hans

Hail, Vulcan-

Assuming you are capturing DV over 1394:

I don't think there's a bug here, and you almost certainly are capturing stereo, but if in doubt send a little captured clip (like 1 sec) to drdropout@sonicfoundry.com and I'll check it out.

Thanks, I'll send you two short clips that I recorded for test purposes. One scenalyser clip and one Vegas clip.

Hans:

Where did the audio come from? Some camcorders, if you plug an external mic into one channel, and use the internal mic for the other, make dual mono audio instead of single stereo. Vegas will only see the first mono audio channel. This is similar to the 4-channel 12-bit audio issue (Vegas only sees channels 1/2, not 3/4).

There is an application called Scenealyzer that can capture channels 3/4, so it might be able to handle dual mono as well.

There's also a convoluted workaround that involves getting an old copy of VidCap that did Type-1 captures, and an older version of Vegas that used to build proxies for all streams, and then re-naming the proxy files and using them as source media in Vegas 3 or 4.

The audio came from my Sony DCR-PDX10P and the built in mic which is a stereo electret condenser microphone. The audio did not come from the XLR adaptor (which records mono). I get stereo (at least that's what's reported by Vegas) when using Scenalyser.

I have observed quite a difference in volume levels from L to R on my Vegas Captured video. Never had a hint of mono.
