I found a way to open a dvd in vegas

I have been fooling around with this for a couple days now and have come up with something that is fairly easy and seems to work just fine for me. So here goes.
When you insert a dvd in the computer you get a message what do you want windows to do.
Select open folder to view files using windows explorer.
It list 2 folders an audio which is empty and a video.
Open the video folder, there are several small files and one large file.
Right click the large file and open properties, go to opens with and change to sony vegas.
Right click again and open properties plus, switch it to an avi file
Copy this file it to your hard drive where ever you save video files.
Now in my computer at least it opens in Vegas and plays audio and video just fine.
I hope this helps out some other rookies like my self.
Thanks again to everyone who has helped me in the past
Gary

Try it again on a DVD that contains AC3 audio.

Question: is the avi file that results from this compressed? Is all the data that was lost in converting the original file to an mpg file and burning to a DVD missing? If so, it doesn't seem to be of much value for re-editing purposes.

Also, if the original contains AC3 audio I don't believe it will transfer to Vegas using this method.

It's still MPEG-2 video no matter how you slice it and dice it, so yes, even though he renamed it to an AVI nothing magical happened to decompress it. Yes, it's not the greatest for editing, but if it's all you've got...

You are also correct in that if the audio is AC3 (or DTS), then you won't get the audio either.

Another potential issue is the assumption that there is only one large file. In fact on a typical DVD there could be many VOB files that make up a project. I suspect in this specific case the DVD came from one of those "record to DVD cameras."

I doubt it's from a 'record to DVD camera' most of them record the audio as ac3, well certainly the Sony ones do and even then it's dodgy ac3, BeSweet chokes on the audio, I've had to run it thorugh ac3Fix first.

The footage was shot on a Xl1's. My newer ones are all captured and rendered on vegas. I have some old ones rendered on pinnacle and some on premiere. After this process the files say they are not compressed. I do not see that I have any files that are AC 3. It appears that the quality is still fine. You guys are way above me. Whenever I have had a rookie question I have always got good answers here. I thought maybe I could help a fellow rookie out, Sorry I was not of any help.

Spot, Grazie . . . ditto for me.
This is exactly why I enjoy this forum, unlike that of Pinnacle where you'd have been sh_t upon long time ago. I am glad I left not only for a superior product but also a forum.

Gary, sorry if I "sounded" like I didn't appreciate your help. I was trying to answer the other questions posed and I can see how those answers might not have come across very well. Your participation is always welcome!!

One thing about the forum is that topics resurface as needed. This is definitely one of those topics that people need to revisit once in a while. Not everyone, but most new forum members.

And Grazie is very right, it's more than the posts. The entire threads are helpful.

Thanks for the kid words. I really do learn a lot by reading posts on this forum. When I started with vegas several months ago I could not even understand the majority of the posts. Now I can at least grasp a few.
Keep up the good work.

Gary, thanks for the post. At least I can open a vob file in Vegas by renaming it. However mine didn't have the audio. Help ! Anyone?

If your audio is AC3, you won't have audio, because Vegas doesn't have an AC3 decoder.
