I-frames?

When adding markers to a track in DVD Studio Pro, you can only place them at GOP boundaries. This means that you will often not be able to place them exactly where you want them. When you place the markers with a video editor, the integrated MPEG encoder automatically forces an I-frame at that position, placing a GOP boundary exactly at every marker and providing perfect marker placement.

how about in vegas? can vegas render out generic markers? what is the workflow?

what i used to do in vegas was split my timeline into chapters and leave about a 20 frame leader (a graphic) between each section

Let me try.

Selecting Customize Template, for the MainConcept MPEG2 codec, there is a checkbox under the I-frame options to "Insert I-frames at markers". On the Render As window you need to select "Save project markers in rendered media file" (under MetaData Options in VP 11).

Placing the resulting mpeg file on the timeline in DVD Architect Pro 5.2 you can zoom in on one of the markers. Grabbing a marker and moving it slightly shows where I-frames (indicated by a small dark notch at the frame marks) were created. All markers always fall on an I-frame. Counting the frames between I-frames (default 12) shows that I-frames are indeed forced where the markers are.

Edit: If you are manually inserting a Scene Marker in DVD Architect the same applies. Zoom in and move the added marker to an I-Frame - it is not automatically place at an I-frame.

thanks, i might end up using dvda but if i dont not sure that would work...good to know though.

i am assuming if i leave a 20 frame graphic and the beginning/end of each chapter i would be safe to manually set the chapter markers in the dvd authoring software whichever one i use

but it would be less clunky if i could do 10 frames

It is a lot easier to place the markers in Vegas. And as was stated, this creates I-frames so you can be exact. But you can add more or move them in DVDA if you want.

its been a while since i did this and im also wondering about the end user experience.

like if they choose "play all" will the dvd player still stop on every chapter marker/point or will it just keep playing

It all depends on how you program it, but normally you link to chapter 1 and it will play to the end.
