I got the HVR-A1 today!

Well I got the HVR-A1that I had on order today. Oh my god is it cool! It's so tiny! I was all set to just use it for widescreen DV, but then I had to try it out in HDTV. Now I get it. Four times the resolution is hard to give up once you've seen it. People can talk about their DVX's, their XL2's or whatever, but HD is simply orders of magnitude better, even on this little camera. It's like looking at a moving photograph! It's hard to believe you can get this good a picture for under three grand!

Congratulations! A1 is just amazing for its size and price! HD market needs more of these consumer products!

I absolutely agree, and I have no doubt that Canon and Panasonic will soon have HD entries that will be even better.

How is it in lowlight conditions (like in a mall or restaurant)? I am filming indoors walking from place to place following the subject (using XL1). I have a Sony TRV25 that I shot along with the Canon XL1 for extra "stuff". Could not color correct the TRV25 to get even close to the XL1. Reds looked more like brown on the TRV25 in low light conditions.

Thanks,
Harold

Well I have a TRV20 which I'm sure is in the same ballpark as your TRV25 and a "see in the dark VX2000". I would put the HVR-A1 almost smack in the middle of the TRV-20 and the VX2000 low light wise. A well lit room looks better than I thought it would and really quite good, but low light ability is not good enough for a dimly lit room that would be fine with the VX2000.. One thing I have noticed is that in HDV mode, the noise particles you get from boosting the gain are about a quarter of the size that they are in SD mode.
