Are you saying Vegas won't launch if net access is cut off?

zone alarm is often screwy anyway ,,,

vegas is looking to connect to 'update' , which you can turn off in options ..

The new mantra seems to be upgrade to version 6 its great, oh but wait, many of the new features don't work or present security risks, so ah.... just turn them off.

ROTFLMAO!

Simple question for those using V6.

Does Vegas need a working Internet connection to use "media Management" or doesn't it?

If so, Why the $%^$(#?

no it does not need a working internet connection

BillyBoy, have you ever heard the expression "Lead, follow or get out of the way." ??

Please pick one.

Your obvious delight that there are issues that some are having with Vegas 6 adds nothing to the discussion, doesn't influence anybody sitting on the fence about whether to try it, and only serves to diminish whatever remaining respect forum members have for you.

You have experience and expertise that make you a potentially valuable asset to this forum, but the frequent outbursts, slurs and sneering tone exhibits exactly the type of unprofessional behavior you eschewed in a recent O.T. post.

I'm one who's been silent when it comes to the argumentativeness that's been in evidence so much recently, but I'm guessing that this is a minority that's shrinking. And there's a reason that more and more of us are speaking out. We want a forum with a community spirit, where we can come for help, to share and help others and to discuss Vegas/DVDA. We didn't sign up to see a sideshow.

CheeseJHole,

FYI, Vegas has been 'phoning' home via the web since, at least, Vegas 4. I've currently set my firewall to block Vegas from accessing the network, yet it starts without issue. I don't have v6, so I cannot confirm your statement.

However, the MSSQL MSDE instance runs under a different executable (like sqlservr.exe) in your Task Manager. MSDE does not 'phone' home.

---

Your software was probably hanging on start since your firewall intercepted the packets and was waiting for an action from you...keeping Vegas 'interested' enough to wait for a response that wasn't coming unless you approve or reject it for access....we'll that's the way my Vegas 4 worked.

To stop Vegas from "phoning home", turn of "Use Net Notify" in the Preferences. Anyway, it's just checking for new versions, nothing more.

Marty/ezway,

You are thoroughly confused. You seem to know just enough about this topic to mislead and misdirect, albeit, probably accidentally. Frankly, I’ve never used Vegas6, but from what I’ve read it uses MSSQL MSDE (Microsoft SQL Server, Desktop Edition). MSDE is the ‘lite’ version of Microsoft’s flagship database product SQL Server 2000 (soon to be replaced by MSSQL2005). MSDE lacks enterprise level features, more than 5 concurrent users, and some other ‘stuff’ that’s beyond this conversation. For Microsoft to tell its customers to ‘disable’ its database product (when necessary) would be analogous to Ford or GM saying ‘Do not drive our cars since they are unsafe.’

Furthermore, true media management is not a ‘simple’task. It should be ‘simple’ to use, but not necessarily to implement.

Bottom line, Sony made the right choice using MSDE as the backend for media management. It’s cost-effective, scalable, stable, relatively bug free, and well supported. I’m fully confident it provides a great platform to store all the information necessary for effective media management.

Making quite a good living off this ‘stuff’,

Mike is right. MSDE is no less secure than any other edition of SQL Server. You just have to make sure that you apply the latest service packs.

All of these "it's Microsoft so it must be insecure" come from the fact that people have seen a ton of security releases the last year or so. The reason for that is that Microsoft has a ton of people who are responsible purely for finding bugs in products. When they find one, they release a patch ASAP. The result is that Microsoft software is now the most secure platform. Read industry news sources and you'll find that to be true.

Now what I'd like to see is a way to force Vegas to use an existing SQL Server instance instead of requiring MSDE.
