Yep, no real difference to the UI functionality. But the attempts to make it 'pretty' have actually made it as ugly as sin. I find it harder on the eyes, plus I think it looks deeply unprofessional. Hate to say it, but I'm going to be embarrassed to show Vegas 5 to clients.
The new icons are professional in quality. Subtle yet easy to identify. It's not a good sign if your clients are paying more attention to the icons in your editor than your production.
Plus you can adjust the saturation in preferences to make them even subtler.
I know the thumbnails are small so check out the "brochure" link in the left column as well. The VelocityHD has an uncanny appearance to the design of the Vegas interface. I guess immitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
But, I think it would be nice to have an inverted color scheme swtich on that display tab to give us something along these lines.
"I find it harder on the eyes, plus I think it looks deeply unprofessional. "
I'm in agreement totally. It would've been one thing if Sony released Vegas with the current icon set and said "more to follow," but instead I'm afraid we're stuck with these icons and a limited amount of control over their color/saturation.
I suggested it before and I'll say it again -- why not a Vegas Classic theme that looks like 4.0? If I can't completely re-skin the app my way, at least leave it unchanged for those of us who'd prefer...
Incidentally, you wouldn't have to look too far to find what looks like a better UI design than the V5 look -- these forums offer some good ideas!
cheesehole - "It's not a good sign if your clients are paying more attention to the icons in your editor than your production".
I don't want to be funny cheesehole, but I expected someone to reply with something like that and it's such an old cliche!
I work on the audio side of things, dealing with some fairly major clients, and I think most people understand that, like it or not, a lot of this business is about perception. Sure, it's the end product that counts in the end, but how you come across is very important, and how your studio looks - inc. software - counts. I'm sure the same is true with the video side of things.
I want to be proud of using Vegas - I love it - and don't want people to think I'm working with software made by Tomy. Is that too much to ask?
I have yet to upgrade but having seen the screen shots and read the many comments I gotta say I'm a bit pensive and disappointed. The thought of showing the new " Vegas ", despite its features, to a potential client, client, or peer makes me shudder. I've shown off Vegas to many a person in the field that use Avid, Final Cut, etc who already had preconceived notions about Vegas being less than professional for editing. I can't imagine doing that now with its " new " look, its an embarrassment.
Come on Sony, you've got to sort this out. Either rethink it completely, or make it totally customizable, inc. individual icon colours. The faders particulary make me wince.
Problem is, you lower saturation etc to make it look less naff, but you then loose the definition of the icons and it's hard to work out what's what.
EDIT: Problem is, you lower saturation etc to make it look less naff, but you then loose the definition of the icons and it's hard to work out what's what.
Okay now that is a valid complaint. There should be a "contrast" slider or something. Also the "ripple edit" indicator is just about invisible, and the color controls don't have an effect on it.
What is the problem!
Version 5 icons are graphicly cleaner which equals more professional.
It also is not very pro to complain about minor things.
If you're talking about the Suits, they love rubbing elbows with the artists, you don't have to dumb it down artistly to their level.
The title of this thread reminds of the scene on The Sopranos where Michael Imperioli** and his crew are outside of a club or a movie premiere. There behind the velvet ropes amongst the crowd who are not getting in. Martin Scorsese gets out of a limo and you expect Imperioli to shout something about Goodfellas or Mean Streets or even Casino. Instead he raises his fist and shouts
"Kundun. I liked it."
**If you remember Imperioli was in Goodfellas. He played Spider the kid Joe Pesci shoots in the foot.
>>> please tell me you haven't been able to move the timeline to the bottom all along!<<<
I guess it depends on how bottom bottom is. But yeah, you could have done that. I think the 'docking' in the new version just works out better because you can 'save' the layout. With Vegas 4 the problem is that if you sneeze and somehting moves that is where it is stuck. I spent a long time re orginizing the windows to where I liked them for my workflow - as long as I don't shut anything down or move anything, or god forbid reset anything to 'deafult', all is well.
Just to add - Premiere has had the workspace idea for along time now. I am glad Vegas finally adopted it, but it would also be nice to have it available as something other than a keyboard shortcut only. In Premiere 6/6.5 I had one workspace for audio, one for output/ptt and one for editing.
I use/have Prem Pro so know what u mean, I have posted on the scripts forum to see if ti is possible to have a script change to different workspaces, then I can modify it for w1, w2, w3 etc and even create icons and add them to the toolbar and the menu structure and have them as hotkeys.
>If you have them undocked at the top the menus kinda belong in the wrong place
Are you saying you want the menu bar to be at the top, the tracks at the bottom, and the rest in between? Most functionality in the menu is geared for the track view - I don't know why you would want them separated.
