I'm missing the point of Regions

I'm working with a long project (2 hours) with mass amounts of tracks/video/photos/etc. I'm trying to find the easiest way to move large areas around on the timeline.

I usually use Grouping, or Ultimate S Pro or Excalibur to select an area, then drag it that group to a new location on the timeline. But with this large amount of events on the timeline, I'm always afraid I'll miss a little piece of data when selecting.

So I was trying out Regions. I just used Ultimate S Pro to change my markers to Regions. I Right-click a Region, choose "Select Region," and then try to move it, and only the Region markers move.

I was just looking through Spot's book, "Vegas Pro 8 Editing Workshop," and he says, "Regions can behave as permanent indicators of a selection either in the Trimmer or on the Timeline. Regions can act as reminders of specific sections to be returned to later or can act as edit-length indicators int he Trimmer" (p. 272). I'm not sure how just being an "indicator" helps me more than a regular Marker would.

If Regions aren't useful to select groups of events or to even group those events, I'm missing the point of them. What are people using Regions for?

My region selection workflow goes something like this. Work from the trimmer and create regions that are permanently embedded into the clips. Then lay all clips onto the timeline and use the GoTo script extension to see your regions in an ascending list complete with single click playback of any of the regions.

regions are a combo of two markers linked together. So, basicly, when you want to select everything in a region, double click on the region "tab" right above the TL. Then you have that area selected. Markers don't do this & if you do it in the area where the tabs are but not on a region tab it will select everything between the first marker/region marker on the left & right.

Are you sure markers don't do that? I do exactly what you described, but with markers, all the time.

Once saved, you can view regions in the Vegas Explorer. They can be dragged onto the timeline.

I did not know either of those things. Thank you very much.

Markers don't work like that (at least with 8c, which I just tried it on). You can't double click on the marker tab to select an area, you need to double click in the area right bellow the tab's between them, and that either selects between the immediately left & right markers or everything on the TL. Double clicking on the region tab always selects the region. I just double checked to make sure there wasn't a neat function I was missing out on. :)

That's the advantage of people having different editing styles. :D I've learned quite a few things by reading what others do!
