I need HELP with previews!

Okay, I'm a new Vegas user, coming from years on FCP, and so far it's great, but I'm running into a huge problem:

When in the Preview window my project setting is 1280x960 (24p) (I know it's odd, but it's 4:3), and for some reason at preview (auto) setting the display is at 640x480 (NOT 4:3), so when as I'm letterboxing my 4:3 material, I'm not seeing everything in the real frame. When I render, it renders it correctly with a 16:9 matte, but the framing is no longer correct because I've been editing at an incorrect aspect ratio. When I go to Preview (Full), the frame then extends beyond the borders of the preview window and then I can't see it - is there a way to SET the preview window size??? I'm starting to hit a deadline here, and I can't figure out this problem, any help would be grandly appreciated! Thanks!
Josh

The preview will be limited to 640x480 at draft quality setting. At preview quality and better, the preview window can be undocked and sized to show the full 1280x960. To undock, left click on the left side of the preview window and drag. It's the little bar running down the left side of windows.
