I have the 20mm f1.7 which I've been using on my GF3.

Hi Laurence,
I think I've read that you're selling your D5100 and replacing it with the GH3.
Can you please help me understand the advantages in your opinion of he GH3 over the D5100 (for shooting video)? I'v read various reviews that said the D5100 was better than the GH3. Thanks alot for helping me to understand the differences between these two cameras.

The one thing that is spectacular about the Nikon D5100 is how good it is in low light when you put a fast prime on it. In this context it is just wonderful. If the GH3 is in the same ballpark in low light, I will be selling the Nikon. If it is significantly worse in low light, I will keep the Nikon just for low light shooting.

Well it was waiting for me at the local Federal Express office when I got back from visiting my parents in Pennsylvania over Christmas. Still figuring it out and will use it for the first time on a gig this morning.

This camera is one of those rare tech things where if my budget was unlimited, I would still get the same camera. Wow! Just wow! I will do the interviews I'm recording today with some DC-bias powered mics from microphone madness.com and some headphones plugged right into the camera. No Beachtek or Juicedlink box needed for setting level, metering or monitoring. From my tests last night, it looks like I could do everything in intelligent auto and have it come out just fine. Low light looks as good as my Nikon D5100 with f-2.8 zoom lenses on both cameras. This blows me away because the D5100 is pretty spectacular in low light.

Ok, just did my first interview shoot with the GH3. The only way to describe it is that getting good shots with this camera is kind of like going hunting at a petting farm. It is just too easy!

OK, I am officially in love with this camera! The picture and the sound are both just stunning! I just did a shoot this morning outside of a church with just a little cloud cover and a Rode VideoMic Pro on a mic stand. The picture and the sound are both just amazing. I will put some links up once I get a little further into this project.

Hi Laurence, my first emotion is envy!!

I am very interested to hear more about your early impressions and experiences with the GH3 and lens(es).

In particular, whether you find the lack of zebra & peaking big issues and similarly with regards to Lack of N.D filters. Does your workflow (which I think includes outdoor location TVads) require ND filters? If so, how do you address this - screw on variable? How's it working for you? Thanks.

Laurence,

Curious to know your impression about rode mic. I am thinking about it for my canon 5d3, at some point when I get comfortable.

I love mine. Am also looking at the stereo version, not to replace the one I have, but to have a wider stereo option for b-roll.
