Icarus software question

DataMeister wrote on 11/8/2003, 1:38 PM
I was reminded just a few minutes ago from another thread about this guys web site....

http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zap/kidwars/intermezzo/

He opens with a really cool shot in which he used Icarus to track his camera shot and then instert some 3D graphics to match.

Icarus used to be free, but eventually went professional, so I was wondering if anyone on here used that softare in the free version and might have the install binary. I wrote the guy from that site a few months ago but had no response.

I want to experiment with that kind of stuff, but there is no way I can justify a $1000 piece of software just for fun.

There was an incredibly long thread about Icarus about two months ago. Lots of people worked to find places where you could still download the software. In the end, probably a dozen links were provided, and I think one person agreed to put it on his site for awhile. It might still be there. Don't know whether it included source. Here's the link (it actually starts in the middle of another thread on steadycams):

Icarus

and here's a follow-up thread:

I was very impressed with that opening shot as well. I also looked for Icarus and found that it had gone commercial. I am not sure if the license for the older software would allow for any one to re-distribute it but I would love to play with that motion control software as well.

Please post if you find a site still legally distributing it.

The original two threads listed in my original response above list several sites that might still have it.

If you want to purchase the commercial version of this software, here's the link:

I've looked through the other threads and tried all the links but none of them seem to have the file. Either the servers are down, too busy or who knows.

I'll try them again later, but if anyone wants to make a fresh working link and post it here that would be awesome.

Such a great message Flack..

I just don't get the port thingie.. keeps timing out. Anyone have instructions?

thx
Liam_Vegas wrote on 11/8/2003, 5:24 PM
most ftp programs have a way for you to set the "port thingie". By default it is set to port 21 but in this case "Flack" has set his server to be on a special non-standard port. If you are using FTP within Internet Explorer you use the syntax of ftp://mashadmin.no-ip.info:21123/

Although I tried to login with the usernam / password specified and I get an error saying the password is incorrect.

I tried connecting but no luck. First I had to go to the original message to see that your userid must be Markey rather than markey.

This got me closer but now it says
530 Your IP is banned : 205.178.43.228

As far as I know my ISP is clean. Did you block a range that I am in for some reason?
DataMeister wrote on 11/8/2003, 11:35 PM
My IP is banned also. Any reason that might be?

I used Markey/video

I'm using SmartFTP. And I'm behind a hardware based firewall on DSL (which hasn't affected me before)

Fair enough (and I think the full version of Icarus is a bit more than that!). I have ICARUS v2.09 myself (personal free version - just before it went commercial), but the license condition clearly states that I cannot legally distribute it. I'm pretty sure no one else can either.

In any event, there is a much chaper alternative that is currently in beta and seems to be shaping up well - SynthEyes. It doesn't have the scene reconstruction capabilities of Icarus as far as I can see (only played with it a bit), but so far it has managed to get useful tracking from shots that Icarus couldn't handle (though this might say more about my Icarus skills than anything else). Go here to find out more and sign up for the public beta:

http://www.ssontech.com/index.html

The projected commercial cost is said to be arounf US$350. Pretty affordable compared to the software it competes with, as well as most of the software it's designed to work with.

Hate to ask the stupid question but what does Icarus do? Does Boris Red have similar capabilites?

Hey Guys you have to use passive mode and not port mode.. and the user name is Markey and not markey. its best to use a ftp client programe as well, although you should be able to grab it with IE..

update...

My server will be off for a few hours for maintenance keep checking back.

Icarus (and similar programs) takes footage (eg, a DV AVI file) and examines it using clever maths so as to calculate the camera's motion at the time the footage was shot. You can then use that extracted motion to control the "camera" in your 3D program so that when you combine your video footage with your 3D render, your 3D objects track to the footage. Some of this sort of software can also do tricky things like smooth out the handheld jitters of the footage, or remove moving objects from the footage leaving only the background, that sort of thing.

It's not DIRECTLY relevant to Vegas, but a lot of Vegas users also seem to use 3D software too (even if it's only for titles).

Not to my knowledge, no.

I still have no luck. I did finally get the logon dialog, but after entering the user name and password (Markey and video), my browser just hung. I entered:
ftp://mashadmin.no-ip.info:21123/ in the address section of IE.

Have you got a firewall in place if so try disabling it, then try again. also try the other ip the mashadmin.hn.org one. If this don't work let me know.

your input should look like this

ftp://Markey:video@mashadmin.hn.org:21123

Flack,

Thanks! I was able to connect and see the files, but I'm still waiting to see the progress bar start to report on download percent. I'll give it a few hours and see what happens.

Did you right click on the files and select save as?

Yes (actually in XP is is "Copy To").

I just tried it again, a few hours later. It appears to be copying. Progress bar currently says one hour remaining (I'm downloading the 40 Mbyte file). I'm a little wary of having my "shields" down (I used the DMZ on my router to remove the firewall to this one computer). I'm not sure why that is necessary, but it didn't seem to work until I did that. I'll run a virus scan when I'm finished. It's amazing how many "pings" one gets, presumably from hackers looking for a machine like mine to exploit.

Flack,

Got it. Thanks a bunch for your offering. Now if I can just figure out how to use it!
