IE 4.0 Browser REALLY needed?

Mixmaster wrote on 8/10/1999, 4:09 PM
The requirements state that IE 4.x needs to be installed.
Is this true or is it a recommendation? And if it is
needed...WHY?! IE is a browser and Vegas is a sound
authoring tool...nothing in common!

Vegas already requires DirectX so I can't see any reason for
IE except for possibly IE's integration with Help Files.

I hate IE because it plays with the system, changes all the
file associations, sucks up more hard drive space and system
resources, etc. etc.

Please tell me this is a typo....

Eric,

You've got to be kidding - your running a Windows based operating
system and you are surprised that they want IE installed? If you
DON'T install IE 4 or 5 on a windows 9x/NT machine I think you are
taking a risk. Microsoft has clearly made their browser part of the
OS upgrade path like it or not (see Department of Justice for more
details). Do I like this? Its not really relevant. We vote with our
wallets and we've already done that by using Windows instead of
something else.

In Sonic Foundry's defense, the help files are well written (so far)
and the IE interface is one I actually prefer over the generic
Windows help system or a bundled Acrobat file.

my 2 cents.

Eric,

IE 4.0 or later is only required if you want to view the online help
included with Vegas Pro. If you choose not to run IE on your system,
you won't have any problems using the Vegas Pro software as a result;
it's not a requirement for the software. The reason we decided to
make this requirement is because of the additional functionality that
we can include in the online help with IE. We hope that the benefits
for our users from this additional functionality outweigh any
perceived "negatives" with this requirement.

If you have questions or comments for me about the documentation,
feel free to send them to me.

Thanks,

Stephanie Pfeiffer
