iEEE 1394 and Windows 8.1

Hey Guys/Gals,

I'll been around a while and continuing to edit. Recently upgraded my rig to this decade.

Computer Brand/Model: Home Build
Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit
RAM: G.Skill Z- 2133 16gb
Processor: Intel i7 4930k
Video Card: Nvidia GTX 580
Sound Card: On Board
Video Capture: Firewire
CD Burner: Asus 24F1ST DVD Burner
DVD Burner: Asus 24F1ST DVD Burner
Camera: DVX-100
Add. Comments: Mobo: Asus Rampage IV Black Edition PSU: Corsair AX-1200i CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i Boot Drive: Samsung 850 pro 256 ssd

I use an old DVX100 (a workhorse) and WAS capturing thru Vidcap in Vegas 10 (Windows 7 32bit) via 1394. When I upgraded to Windows 7 64bit my ieee1394 port no longer recognized my DVX100. It did see my old Maxtor plug-n-play HD but not Vidcap. I also use a Canopus ADVC-300 and it did not recognize it either.

No worries (I said), I'll be upgrading to Windows 8.1 64 bit with all new hardware so surely my new rig will work right? . . . . nah, it aint happening.

So, I tried ALL (and I do mean ALL) of the drivers, legacy drivers, alternate drivers with no luck. I purchased two (2) separate ieee 1394 cards (pcie x1) and neither would work.

At this point, only this forum can help. I've enjoyed reading and applying the greatest minds in this industry for over 15 years and I've always found my answer.

So, my question is:
Is there a fix or something I'm not doing correctly?
Or is there a KNOWN ieee1394 card that i can purchase that will work with Windows 8.1? I am now using Vegas 13 (latest Build).

Thanks Team, I appreciate it!

How about keeping an old machine with old Windows just to do your captures?

I know you said you tried all the legacy drivers, but did you get the ones from Microsoft mentioned in this support post? I was able to get my Windows 7/64 bit firewire working using these.

I do what Peter suggests, for the very rare time i ever capture from my old camcorder, i boot up the old Windows XP laptop that otherwise sits on the shelf keeping dust from accumulating on the items beneath it. I figure that by the time that laptop stops operating, i will have long before used the old DV camcorder for the last time.

I'm using Win 8.1 and still have the same Firewire card I bought in 2008 for my XP machine: here
I'm using the MS drivers that Win 8.1 installed. I went from XP 32 to 8.1 64.

Thanks guys for responding.

That is my fall back plan. I'll go back to the 32bit version just to capture.

I hit up microsoft for the latest drivers (even their 'special') release exclusively for 8.1

Unfortunately TheHappyFriar, that is a PCI card. My new Rampage IV BE has only PCIE slots.

Looks like i'll have to set up the old system to capture.

Thanks everybody . . .

got a link to your cards?

So you got one of those cards with the tiny connectors on them then (vs PCI cards).

According to my MB manual the PCI-E 16x slow for the GPU uses the same IRQ as the PCI-E 1x #1 slot. Could you have that issue? They're using the same resources?

Ah! it might be (never thought of that) . . . here is a link to my card;

It is an iocrest. The rampage mobo (i believe) links all the pcie's together but there is a switch to change the settings. I'll check the manual.

@ teetime.

Your suggestion 5 posts up also works with windows10 preview. Not using 1394 these days but nice to know I can use my existing machine with W10. Not tested 'firewire' until I read the thread. Was planning to dual boot via BIOS when 10 is released Thanks for the heads up.
