illegal use of sony vegas??

Former user wrote on 1/1/2026, 11:57 AM

I have used a cracked version of sony vegas in the past. At the time, I did not fully understand the negative impact that using cracked software has on companies and developers who invest significant effort into creating their products.

I would like to take responsibility for my mistake and ask how I can properly compensate your company for my past use of the software.

Please let me know

Even if you no longer use Vegas Pro, maybe purchase the current version - 23 - as a means of compensation.

There is no free version of Vegas Pro. The way to compensate the company is to actually buy the software. I would believe that would be enough.

If you want to make it right, but you do not use the software anymore, buy a copy of VEGAS Pro 23. and gift it to someone. Then your conscience can rest easy knowing you've supported the developers, and you also get to get even more good karma in by gifting a powerful editing tool to someone who may need it. I suggest finding a young up and coming editor who is hungry to learn but doesn't have the means, and gift it to them.

Not many people have that kind of honesty to admit past mistakes and make them right like that, so bravo for that. I too used to pirate VEGAS, but then I started buying it, and now I'm part of the QA testing team and assist in its production.by giving the team recommendations based on my real world use experience. They do a great job of listening to our feedback. I went from pretty much all pirated software to only having one app that was pirated, a CG animation app, and last week I recently went fully legit with it as well, so I too am a former pirate turned supporter. I have to be honest, had I not done that, I would not have been able to make a career for myself and get myself to the point where I earned enough to support these folks, and the makers of the other software I use (Resolume, Cinema 4D, Redshift, Photoshop, After Effects, VEGAS, Reaper, etc). So, I don't feel bad for doing it, because I used the money I made from it to support every one of those apps eventually.

That's my recommendation for you to do the same, go ahead and buy it anyway, and make someone's day by gifting it to them, but find someone who couldn't otherwise afford it so you aren't taking a potential buyer away from the VEGAS development team. Then, maybe they can use it to make enough to support it on their own down the line as well!

Since it was Sony Vegas @Former user used illegally, @Former user probably should buy something from Sony (and give that away)...Sony still makes nice cameras!

Not necessarily. In the distant past, I too pirated (going back to the C64 days), but then started buying the actual software (from Amiga days onward) because it was just plain wrong to steal. I wouldn't want anyone pirating my "stuff", so I stopped doing it myself.
