Image overlay on video

TomQ wrote on 3/31/2009, 11:25 AM
I am in the middle of editing video and i wish to place an image/logo on top of the video footage.

I have the logo in both .jpeg and .png file type.

I am able to place the file into the video on the video overlay channel. However i really want it to work in such a way that the white fill space in the image is transparent. Therefore i converted the jpeg to a png. When i use the png file type in the video the previous white jpeg backgroun ow appears as a black fill.

Any suggestions/solutions?

Thanks

Very easy:

PNG format files have an "alpha channel". That is, you can use PNG editing software to not only color pixels but also make them transparent. In this case, you want to leave the logo intact, and set the surrounding area to 100% transparent.

JPGs do not have transparency. Your best bet will be to ChromaKeying.
Make the background of the image an obnoxious color that isn't used anywhere in the logo or in the video. Then attach the Sony ChromaKey effect/filter. In that filter, you can choose a color to convert to transparent/clear, allowing the underlying video to show through.

And, because you wrote that the potentially transparent area of your PNG appears as black: double-check this:

(by memory, so I might be a little wrong)
Right-click the image on the timeline, and select Properties.
The second tab should be Media-Information, and near the bottom should be an Alpha-type. If its set to "None" Make sure its set to "Straight / Pre-matted", (or try the other settings).
