Impending crash clue v9.0c

This just may help somebody else, so here goes.

Several times now, while editing in Vegas Pro 9.0c, (mainly moving clips around, trimming and deleting stuff) I have had Vegas not respond to something such as deleting a clip. I immediately do a Save (or SaveAs), which happens, but anything else afterwards is dead. Then the dreaded hour-glass on the pointer and the words "Not Responding" appear. Nothing for it but the three-finger salute and kill Vegas via Task Manager.

The saved version is dated later than the auto-saved version and has all the edits up until the freeze occurred.

The moral is (apart from doing frequent SaveAs to a new project as a matter of course) to be alert for an edit that didn't happen and to immediately do a SaveAs.

I don't know if this clue of an impending freeze shows up the same way in other versions of Vegas, but it doesn't hurt to be vigilant.

I also do frequent closure of Vegas and reload of project with a brief check of generated media to see that it hasn't been swapped. While I have had video clips messed up too, generally it is the generated media that tends to suffer.

I am using Win 7 64 bit.

10 and 11 both do this on my computer. If I wait, Vegas usually recovers and I don't have to do anything.

I have waited quite some time for a recover, but I forget how long now. I'll let it go for a real long time next time and see if it does.

No sign of life after 40 mins, so RIP.

How much RAM do you have?
PeterDuke wrote on 4/27/2012, 9:07 AM
12 GB
Win 7 64 bit

Dave, were you talking about unresponsiveness after Vegas has rested (no editing, etc) for a while?

I also get this where the video doesn't play but the interface still seems alive. The HDD light glows brightly during the hiatus until life returns. Then business as usual.

Sometimes this eventually goes away, but after I have to restore a backup image of my C: drive to fix some problem, this behaviour comes back again. I am currently waiting for it to go away again.

OK, not a RAM amount issue! Can you have a Task Manager Process tab open while you are editing (sorted by CPU descending), be sure to "Show processes from all users. Then when it happens again, see if something is running in the background that is consuming your resources.

Peter, yeah I thought that might be what you are experiencing, but sounds like you are locking up for whatever reason. Or I get that sometimes when I think Vegas is doing some housework. Adjusting the UNDO file or something.

Sorry can't help more.

My video editing machine is pretty lean. It normally does not have internet access and I have no antivirus installed. When the HDD light comes on, not much else is happening (no user app anyway). I assume that Windows is busy preening its feathers or contemplating its navel, and then when I intervene, it suddenly has to load everything up again to be ready to do my bidding.
