At this point Vegas, SF or Acid cannot open MP4 files.
Find a program that can, covert to a supported format or... digitize from an analoge source like the headphone output to>soundcard.

Vegas 6 can open MPEG 4 files (H.264/AVC) and with QT installed you'll be able to open additional flavors of Mpeg-4 (3G, H.263...).

Copy protected files from itunes...those will not open. Is this what you have? AAC and MP3 should be fine, but anything with DRM won't be editable.

~so to be sure, files with the m4p extension purchased from itunes cannot be imported into VMS 4.0 or 6.0? (aside from the headphone jack idea).

and being protected files these cannot be converted to any other format by any other available program?

also, for you itunes users, i just signed up and i noticed when right clicking on tracks in your library there is an option to "convert selection to AAC". what is AAC and what is this option for?

Well there is a way around this. In iTunes, not from your iPod, make a selection of the tracks you want and then burn them as an audio CD. You can then use the 'Import audio from CD' option in Vegas, or rip them with any CD ripping software as you normally would.

This converts your audio to Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) which is at the core of the MPEG-4, 3GPP and 3GPP2 specifications, mp4 format is generally a smaller but higher quality file when compared to the older .mp3
