Import openEXR ,

Jean-Louis-Quevy wrote on 7/9/2023, 3:10 AM

hello, I work a lot in 3D on Blender 3.6 and all my renderings are done in openEXR and I would like to work on the finish on Vegas Pro for EFX compositing, sounds and final editing, but I think it's impossible in Vegas pro to work in videos based on openEXR images, so for the moment I had to take Davinci Resolve free...., the question is?? should i leave vegas pro and keep davinvi resolve after more than 15 years working on it?? (I am 68 years old and a musician), thx , jean-Louis

Hi, thank you for your advice, I can hardly import, my openEXR files are compressed in DWAA...with 5760 images (+- 4.30'), it's heavy...but I'll try..thanks

Jean-Louis-Quevy wrote on 7/9/2023, 5:42 AM

hello again, I think I found the problem, I imported 2 different versions, openEXR without compression and openEXR with DWAA and DWAB compression, and Vegas pro does not support these video compression systems

Thank you @Jean-Louis-Quevy for letting the forum know about what you've found - it may help others in the future who have troubles with EXR media. If your EXR without compression media works well in Vegas Pro and has solved the problem, you could code your last comment as the Solution.

@Jean-Louis-Quevy 👍 This what mine say, I don't know how to find more info,

I created them with Silhouette, I set it to None, I'll try again later with DWAA and DWAB , if nothing more than curiousity 👍

Which advantage does EXR have instead for example PNG? Can EXR files imported as a sequence into Vegas?

Former user wrote on 7/9/2023, 6:28 AM

@3POINT Hi, yes these can be imported as a sequence & as far as i understand it, they're better than png for the colour & they can be lossless, I have a bookmark that I keep trying to understand but when it gets to 'Files with the EXR extension are raster images saved in a special format. The OpenEXR format is a high dynamic range image file format, similar to the HDR raster image format. This format is used to store images in high quality with a great color and luminance range" I get lost 🤣

What is an EXR File?

3POINT wrote on 7/9/2023, 6:41 AM

Sounds like big files without compression. I stay with PNG for my purposes.

Dexcon wrote on 7/9/2023, 6:42 AM

Researching this earlier in Blender's user manual - though unfortunately I can't find it again - they did recommend that the OpenEXR export format was recommended where the export was to be further color graded/etc in another program. If no further processing needed to be done, then .bmp, .png, .jpg was recommended but then it also depended on what bit rate (including floating) was wanted.

@Dexcon Hi, I posted this in the comment above, maybe it'll make more sens to you 👍 https://massive.io/file-transfer/what-is-an-exr-file/#exr-file

@3POINT Yeah for what I do png is fine, I researched it when i got the Boris plugins because they seem to like it, I understand that link when i read it but also a lot goes over my head, Boris have since added GStreamer that renders a .mov ProRes file so i never really looked back.,

EXR still used in Post Production Industry, especially between colorist, compositor and CGI Artist.

If you're colorist, you would prepared the edited sequence by rendering out EXR clip with ACEScg color space

tag and send it off to compositor/CG artist. They will do the work in ACES and send back to you in EXR format

again and you can grade the footage with all of the valueble dynamic range/data still intact. You cant do that with normal PNG Sequences.

The advantage I see here in VEGAS is that it supports ACES workflow, so if somehow you work with compositor that use for an example Adobe After Effects, both of you can monitor the look in same ACES Color Space which minimizes any color error between the two Post team members.

Dear Jean-Louis,

Thank you for your message. As VEGAS Pro doesn't support this file format it would make since to look at another program if you plan to use this file format frequently.
