Importing DC10+ captures into Vegas?

jdarius wrote on 5/29/2003, 6:37 AM
Ok...I've accepted the fact that I can't capture from the DC10+ using VV3.0.
It crashes as soon as I hit "Done."

But I also can't import captured video. It imports the audio, but for video it says "Stream attributes could not be determined."

What settings do I need when capturing from my Hi8 camcorder, so that the video will work with Vegas?

The Pinnacle DC10+ uses the MJPEG codec. You have to capture the footage using the Pinnacle software that came with the card. You can then use the captured MJPEG AVI files inside Vegas. I used to have the DC10+ for use with my Hi-8. Now I have a Canopus ADVC-100 with a firewire card to convert the video to digital format (DV AVI) and import it into my PC. Much better quality than the MJPEG capture, and highly recommended.

I did capture using the Pinnacle software (Studio 8).
However, Vegas can't import those files.

As for the Canopus, I just bought the DC10+ yesterday, so I don't think I'll throw it away just yet. :-)

Do I need some specific capture settings in order for my captured video to work with Vegas?

Thanks!

I captured a lot of footage with Premier and the DV500 card, but I noticed the AVI files were proprietary--Vegas could not read them. There may have been a codec I was missing, but I didn't bother, I just ripped out the DV500 (along with the clunky Premier) and went with Vegas and firewire--no problems from then on.

Hi idarius:

I'm also use the DC10+, and use the Main Concept MJPG codec to work with video captured from DC10.

http://www.mainconcept.com/codecs.shtml

For view videos in vegas, you can use this demo withouth restrictions... if you need encode, need the license.

Good luck...

This is kind of 'funny' - why? A few months ago I was approached about editing a feautre film and we had discussions. The result at that time was I could not do it because I did not want to open up my box and slap in a DV300 card and downgrade my OS. The thing I was told by the producer, and told rightly so, is if I were to edit the film I needed to edit, not waste my time re-digitaizing or converting the footage that was already captured. So now flash ahead, and then back I guess, 2 weeks ago. I get an email saying that I am going to edit this film and a computer is being put together and sent to me. Now last week I get the computer, with the DV300 card inside.

So - how does this relate? Because of a few issues at this second in time and space I can only access the files via my network. I can't get into the computer so the use of the DV300 card is a mute point. Much to my surprise when I opened one of the files in VV 4.0b it played back. Not only played back but output via firewire, a non Pinnacle card. **GASP** So I opened up Premiere and tried - same result. So last night I went through and made new bins and imported all the files into a new VV project. I went into every folder and tried random files and all played fine in VV, and all but one set of files output via firewire fine. I am NOT using the DV300 or any Pinnacle product on my system, yet all of this footage I am going to edit WAS captured with the DV300 - supposedly only playable with a Pinnacle card/codec.

So I have no clue why this is working when it "shouldn't" but it does work. All the files simply read as "DV", even the one group of about 5 that will not output in VV. Doesn't help jdarius with the issue but there has to be some codec on a system that will allow a Pinnacle captured file to play in VV 'as is', with no conversion. As this is just happening with me over the last 48 hours I can't say what it might be.

You do have to have the Pinnacle DC-10+ card IN the PC in order for Vegas to recognize the files. OR, as someone stated above, if the card is removed already, you need to have another 3rd party MJPEG codec installed. I know this because I captured files with the DC10+ card and then took it out of my PC and then Vegas no longer recognized the files. Search the web for software MJPEG codecs. I found one for free, but I can't remember the name; I think it starts with an "M".

Hope this helps.

I am trying to run the Vegas Video 4.0 demo on the machine which has my DC10+ and Studio 8 software.

So the MJPEG codec is there.
I downloaded the Mainconcept codec mentioned above, just to try it, but it specifically says not to install it on a system which has an MJPEG hardware device, or the software codec will overwrite the hardware's codec.

So..I'm capturing stuff fine, and Vegas should be using the MJPEG codec on my machine...right?

I use without problems the codec of Main Concept to open archives in Vegas.
In any case, in Video Captures Xpress appears in the right inferior part the type of filter that this being used for the capture, that in my case is the DCxx, that is to say, the hardware of Pinnacle.
In case of overwrite, you can instal again the DC10 software... but is no my case.

In any case, nothing is lost with trying it...

Good luck...
