Importing EDLs

Hi, I am new to this forum and am using a trial version of Vegas 8 Pro for the first time. My permanent editing application is Premiere Pro 1.5, but that could change in the future. I really like what I perceive as ease of use, different and better out of the box video and audio fx, and audio capabilities from Vegas 8. Like I said previously, my main app right now is PPro which I did the rough editing of my project on so I would have the full 30 days to play with Vegas. I saved all of my sequences from PPro as EDLs and opened them in Vegas.

The problem I am having is that most of the video clips will show up on the timeline, but some don't. About the first 3-5 audio clips will show up on the Vegas timeline, but the rest will not. All of the source files show up in the media bin, and clips will hold the right place in the timeline, but it is like the edited clips (the ones that aren't showing up) on the timeline are not connecting with the source files.

This was my first attempt at exporting/importing EDLs so I am not sure if I did it correctly. I posted this on the Audio forum because most of the missing clips, I will call them blank clips, on the timeline are audio clips. There basically blank clips holding spots on the time line for the proper duration of the clips.

I hope this made since. If anybody else has had this problem, or a similar problem, I would like to hear what you did. Thanks.

What format were these EDLs from PP? Vegas supports txt and aaf. I have had very good luck with aaf.

I believe they were saved in .txt files. I have noticed a few posts talking about the same problem--no audio or waveform in the clip. The audio portion is basically showing up as a blank edited clip. It appears that in those posts it does not have anything to do with the EDL as there is no mention of an EDL. I will try to save as .aaf though. Thanks for the help.

Did Vegas give you a dialogue about missing clips when it opened/imported the EDLs?

The reason I ask is that if it did you can then select the location of the source video/audio and relink it.

Yes it did. It asked for the first file that comprises the first track on the timeline. So I browsed to the AVI that I wanted and chose it. Then it asked if I wanted ir to search for all, or I believe the choice was "Yes to all." Sorry, I am not in front of it at the moment or I would be a little more exact for you. Of course, I chose yes. It would make sense to do it individually rather than batch import, for lack of a better word. That is a very good and simple suggestion. I will try it tonight. Thanks.

The batch import option is usually quite efficient once it has found the first instance of missing media.
That is, I usually manually find the first instance by browsing for the first missing file and then allow Vegas to link any others it finds in the same path automatically.

If other media are in the same path/folder then allowing Vegas to relink automatically usually works. If it comes across other missing media that isn't in the select folder it will present another dialogue asking you to link find the new media.

This will normally cure the missing media problem.

Okay, I finally got around to saving the EDLs as AAFs, as Jesse suggested in the second post. It worked like a charm. In the future it looks like that would be the way to go. Thanks, Jesse.
